It’s an unfortunate fact of gaming in South Africa that even with the fastest possible internet connection we will always experience some latency.
While we love playing FPS, MOBA and Sport games online, lag always seems to hinder us from playing at our top level – leaving us feeling angry and frustrated.
We take a look at the multiplayer games where fastest player input doesn’t count and lag doesn’t constantly haunt you.
This list is based on the best games in their respective Metacritic categories:
Online Boardgames
Online boardgames are typically played round-by-round (and some games even allow for turns lasting several hours), giving you plenty of time to plan your movements.
They also retain their social nature, giving you plenty of time to chat between rounds.
Armello
Jackbox Party Pack (1 + 2)
Twilight Struggle
Tabletop Simulator
Turn-based strategy games
Unlike 4X titles or multiplayer boardgames, TBS games still retain the intense action-focused gameplay players crave when looking for their multiplayer fix.
The emphasis shifts from long-term planning to quick decision-making as you and your opponent duke it out.
XCOM (Enemy Unknown, Enemy Within, XCOM 2)
Chaos Reborn
Frozen Synapse (or Frozen Cortex)
4x games
The grand-daddy of online strategy games, 4X games offer a more cerebral challenge than most other games on this list.
The longer games tend to require more patience, but as they progress they also offer higher stakes.
Civilization (Civilization III, IV, V and Beyond Earth)
Galactic Civilizations (II and III)
Age of Wonders III
Collectible card games
The newer and more popular option, collectible card games have seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to the rise of Blizzard’s Hearthstone.
These games typically follow a shorter time limit and require a strong knowledge of both your cards and your opponents.
Hearthstone
Card Hunter
Hex: Shards of Fate
Offline Co-op
Sometimes you just can’t replace having someone on the couch next to you.
Whether that means passing the controller around or talking across the “LAN cable divide”, having your opponent (or friend) in the room greatly enhances the fun.
Rocket League
Terraria
Borderlands (Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel)
