This is why you can’t trust Steam reviews

23 June 2016

Millions of PC gamers around the world are anxiously awaiting Steam’s annual Summer Sale, which is expected to begin at 19:00 on 23 June.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to rely on Steam’s review system to help decide on purchases as bots could be influencing a game’s rating.

Reddit users initially discovered the bots on smaller indie titles that have had little to no media coverage, but hundreds of positive ratings.

The bots were clearly identifiable by their randomly-generated names and seemingly nonsensical reviews.

While it appears that Valve has already taken steps to remove the bots, it does beg the question as to whether larger publishers have been doing the same thing but with less obviously fake accounts.
