In the future, mankind has destroyed itself, and now the sprinkles of a once-advanced civilization’s remnants roam the now forested post-apocalypse as Neolithic tribesmen.
Sounds clichéd? What if I told you that this post-apocalypse has ROBOT DINOSAURS!
Guerrilla Games haven’t produced any intellectual property other than the Killzone series (and the crappy Shellshock: Nam ’67).
Whilst I didn’t particularly enjoy the drab, grayscale shooters (other than Shadow Fall), this title is looking awe-inspiring and very colourful.
Hopefully, this team’s first attempt at a role-playing game will be nothing short of incredible. At a cursory glance, it certainly looks it.
Obviously, a daring project such as this was flagged as highly risky by team members.
Nevertheless, a team of twenty developers began exploring about twenty different stories, with Fallout: New Vegas’ lead writer John Gonzalez heading the discourse.
Horizon Zero Dawn has been described as an action role-playing game which revolves around a young lass called Aloy.
With her mechanical bow she takes down massive cybernetic dinosaurs, among other robotic creatures that roam the beautiful wilderness.
From explosive arrows, to arrows with cables attached which pin the futuristic-prehistoric behemoths down, Aloy will have a tasty selection of projectiles in her quiver.
After dismantling the mecha-dinos, Aloy can then loot the scrapped reptilian Evangelions for valuable resources.
The RPG elements of the game have been compared to that of Skyrim and Assassin’s Creed.
There are a variety of ways that Aloy can take her foes down. These include setting traps such as tripwires, feathering enemies with arrows, explosive melee action and stealthy takedowns.
New items and weapons can be crafted from looted and discovered resources scattered across the world, which will be entirely open to the player’s whim.
Free roaming this gorgeous environment will take up the time between missions. There will be a day-night cycle and, get this, no loading screens!
There will be no tutorials – according to developers – players will have to use intuition and creativity to beat challenges and find their own groove in gameplay which is completely excellent!
This means that much trial-and-error and compensation will be required.
Developers are utilizing Killzone: Shadow Fall’s engine for their bold new title. I was very impressed with how beautiful Shadow Fall looked, and how smoothly it ran, so you can be assured this titles’ foundations are in good hands.
This title seems very anime-inspired, even the name sounds like an anime. Killzone borrowed heavily from one of my favourite anime films, Jin-Roh; the Helghasts’ character designs were inspired by the CAPO troops’ armour.
Everyone should be excited for this title. It looks immersive, jaw-dropping and enjoyably difficult. Keep an eye out for updates for Horizon Zero Dawn.
