Headphone Suggestions & Recommendations

*** NECRO ***

So, I need some urgent feedback from the guys in the know, specifically DuckKnuckle. I see Amazon has a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M30x on sale for Cyber Monday for a cool $59. Is it worth paying that amount of money for these headies?

I would absolutely love to get a pair before we leave to visit my folks in Cape Town over December and the estimated delivery time is perfectly timed for that. I already have a pair of ATH-ANC23's in my basket for my wife, as she wants a pair of active noise cancelling earphones for the long road to watch movies on her iPad. Total amount for the 2 pairs are R1,576.72 currently including shipping, taxes, etc.

DO IT.

Those are excellent monitor headphones, and you will pay double the discounted price if you buy them here. 10/10 would highly recommend.

Awwwww... Dammit man. I thought you'll come here and tell me they're crap headies and I should rather go for something out of my non-existent budget. Now I have to go spend money I DON'T have. Thank's for ruining my week*!

Oh how awful :p But seriously, the ATH-MX range is fantastic from a budget perspective to a professional one. You'll love them even more after they burn in  we had a couple M30Xs and M50Xs at college and they were a pleasure to use.

How will they fare for gaming, listening to music (primarily metal) and other general use? Would I need a strong amp or will phones and tablets also be strong enough to power them?

I'm still loving my pair of Sony PlayStation Gold headset. Works with everything from PC, to phone and ps4.

They have a very flat response so coming from hi-fi type headphones is going to make a big difference. Gaming is extremely enjoyable as things like explosions, gunfire, and other vehicle noises aren't overly loud so that they drown out everything else.

Metal sounds fantastic through monitor headphones and you're able to clearly make out every nuance, as was intended when it being mixed and mastered using monitor headphones as well.

The impedance on the M30X is only 47 ohms so portable devices are able to drive them without a problem.

Sorry for the late response. Was busy driving home from work.

If you can ever afford these puppy's(Sennheiser PC-350).. Go for it, esp for PC gaming.

Bought a pair in 2007 and never looked back... in fact if ever they do die I would replace them with the exact same ones. They make games come alive and music just works with them. I have done plenty of WOW raids (top tier group with many world 1sts) with mine as well and not once did I ever have a complaint on Teamspeak, Skype, mumble or even Vent.

Oh and also falls for the most comfortable set I have ever had, helped me cope with many 9+ hours of constant dying in hard-cores.

What 7+ years of daily use end up looking like:

Yep they still work like the day I bought em.

No probs man, I placed the order anyway. Seems like the active noise cancelling earphones I got for my wife (can't remember model number right now) are also a sure bet. Every online reviewer raves about them and CNET place them above their chosen Sennies - the CX300 II. I own a pair of CX300 II's and they are supremely comfortable and sound great, so I can only imagine how good the Audio-Technicas will sound!

All in all I paid R1515, which included shipping and taxes. Not a bad price for a pair of studio monitor headphones and a pair of active noise cancelling earphones!

Seeing as its already necro'd... What would you guys suggest for someone whose ears (top bit of cartlidge) get sore? My twin Bro and i have the same problem with headphones...

You could try out earphones perhaps? If you need headphones, something like the Sennheiser HD 215 might work. It has extremely large, soft cups that don't apply much pressure to your ears.

I have stretchers in my ears so they are slightly bigger than average and I don't feel them at all when I use them.

What price are you looking at?
What manufacturer do you have in mind?
What style of headphones do you have in mind (e.g. over-the-head [open/closed back])

The size of the foam around the speakers may also be important (given the size of your ears).

I will second this - not because I own it, but because own a pair of Sennheiser, and so far the most comfortable, reliable headphones I've had so far; sound reproduction leaves nothing to be desired either. Admittedly, an in-line volume control would have been nice, but that's what my KB is for , now innit. :)

Tiz why im asking here... and I have average sized ears i suppose...
Over the head preferable

Sennheiser will definitely give you the comfort you're looking for. I'd say start at the HD 215s. The 202s are a lot more of a tight fit compared to the 215s.

And yes, what is your budget?

The 215s are priced quite steep! You get what you pair for, I guess.

Not R1000 for one pair:o
I will save... my ears can suffer for now:D

I have an old pair of HD201s that have served me reliably over the past couple of years. If you want to consider earphones (in-ear / plugs) look at Sennheiser's CX300 II. They are incredibly comfortable and you'll even forget you're wearing them...

Other than that, I'm anxiously awaiting my Audio-Technica's. They seemed like a steal at $59 on Amazon. Might still be at such a low price. Consider browsing Amazon tonight still for the tail end of Cyber Monday deals. You'll definitely get something much better for your budget from there, shipping and taxes included!
