I bought it on special, and I want my money back - it's HORRIBLE. If you want a great zombie game for R1000 (R950 to be precise) Dead of Winter is amazing!

If any of you are interested, you can get the new edition of D&D from Takealot, Kalahari or Raru. They are al selling it. I think the best place is Raru as they have it for the best price (R500 a book) and they have the Player's Handbook in stock. The other places all have long delivery times. Just FYI.

Arkham Horror and Eldritch Horror are essentially the same game. The few difference are the disposal changing stats from turn to turn in Arkham Horror, and also dynamically changing the tactics needed to win - in Arkham Horror, there's a single strategy to win in that you camp certain spots on the board while Eldritch requires you to spread out to win on multiple fronts.

Eldritch Horror does have an issue in that the core set doesn't come with a lot of different "mystery" cards which are solved to win, so replayability is limited - there is an expansion that fixes that (only 1 expansion for Eldritch right now). Arkham has tons of expansions so I would imagine that you can spice things up easily depending on what elements you like.

Both has pros and cons, but the biggest con is that if you have one then the other isn't worth getting unless you're a HUGE fan of the game. Also, both games can go on very long depending on the playgroup.

Thanks for the info. Eldritch Horror is still relatively new, so I reckon that it will still be expanded upon further. Is it easier to get into and set up than Arkham Horror?
 
Well I have Eldritch, and have for sometime, and only one expansion is out with little news of a new one - so I'd speculate it's a long time away if at all... unfortunately.

Both of them are a mission to set up, packing the right cards in the right places, standees etc - but the components are gorgeous in both games. It's a quality product.

Be warned though, this game isn't 'fun' inherently. It's fun if your playgroup enjoys narrative-based games because the mechanics behind the game are fairly standard/uninspired. There are games that currently compete with both Eldritch and Arkham right now in terms of narrative-based games and are objectively better - if you're not particular to the Lovecraft lore.

EDIT: I stand corrected. There is a second expansion for Eldritch out now, and it's exciting. :D Thanks. Mountains of Madness.

Last year I bought Small World. Epic game, and my brother and I played it endlessly. But getting any of the other family members to play is just so damn hard. I'm sure that they'll enjoy it.. but I just can't get anyone to play with. Do you guys run into the same problem?

For anyone that is struggling to find players, a friend of mine called Adam is co-organizer of a club in JHB.
They actually call it a meetup as there is no membership fees or entry fees.
It has been successfully run for about a year now. With Novembers meetup having 30+ gamers get together.
So for anyone in the JHB area thats wondering where to find players. Here they are:

Thanks for the heads-up! It's always good to know where the meet-ups are happening.

On a separate note, I have recently acquired the new D&D players handbook. I am blown away by the improvements and overall quality of this new edition. It feels very similar to 2nd edition, allowing the players to fill in the gaps where the rules don't cover absolutely everything (unlike 3.5 ed, where there were too many rules to keep track of) while still providing an excellent basic ruleset (like in 3.5ed). There are still some rules for people who like the combat-heavy approach found in 4th edition, but these are by no means required.

In summary, it feels like a perfect amalgamation of the previous editions with some excellent new design decisions included for streamlined and fun play. I have already ordered the Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide (currently the best seller on Raru.co.za). I can't wait to get stuck into this new edition.

If you would like to follow suit, Raru.co.za has the best prices for these books in SA, followed by Takealot, and then Kalahari. Unfortunately, the Players Handbook was out of stock at the time of writing, but I am sure they will get it again. It has been a popular product there.
 
It's definitely worth it - if it's anything like X-Wing, which I hear it is, then it's awesome. I've held those dragons in my hand and they're very awesome looking and well crafted. Jump on it! :D
 
I still have my World of Warcraft board game somewhere! Only played it twice! Think I am going to dig it up again. Really loved the figurines!

Never knew about this thread. Anyone here play Magic the Gathering? I got into it a few months ago and I might have a slight problem now. I mostly play vintage, but we're doing some sealed play in a few months.

Welcome Avenged :D

I played MtG from 1996 to 1999 (during Ice Age, Mirage and Tempest) I understand that it's almost a completely different game now. I realised early on that it's just crack in cardboard and/or foil. Sold all my cards and bought DnD stuff. I still have a deck or two though from Icon tourneys in recent years.
