The MyGaming board games thread

I seriously need friends that enjoy board games. Recently found out a newly-made attorney friend is into it and wants to learn "deeper" games, like Risk. I lol'd.

Risk is probably a good place to get them started. First show them normal risk, then show them Star Wars Risk, then show them Settlers of Catan, then show them Game of Thrones :D

I would say, if you're trying to show off NEW board games (which are better), then don't try Risk. It's too long, and not as fun as what's available. Even Catan - to veteran board gaming enthusiasts - is a bit stale.

A great replacement for Risk is SmallWorld!

I saw Game of Thrones at AWX this afternoon. Too bad about the price tag - R850! I wanna try organise a nice, nerdy evening with beer, pizza and GoT at the office.

And metal. Lots and lots of metal. Epic, loud, metal.

Takealot daily deal today, GoT board game for R600

Never knew about this thread. Anyone here play Magic the Gathering? I got into it a few months ago and I might have a slight problem now. I mostly play vintage, but we're doing some sealed play in a few months.

I still have all of my Magic Cards! Miss playing when Top CD used to have tournaments Sundays in Menlyn

Havent played board games in AAAAGES... Im a huge Risk fan, and after seeing the Lord of the Rings Risk on The Big Bang Theory the mrs has located me one from AWX :D

I was trying to show a progression from "mainstream" board games to the the newer, more enjoyable board games. The idea isn't to get a veteran enthusiast interested in board-gaming. Showing an initial interest in Risk indicates that the person might be willing to play drawn out games like Game of Thrones, Arkham Horror or maybe even Catan. Risk was merely meant to be an example of an entry point to newer games from traditional board games.

Well, I have Small World, and my brother has G.o.Thrones board games. Perhaps we should make a plan to play sometime (hopefully when I'm back in gauteng)

We've been playing quite a bit of Settlers of Catan lately. A fun game, after a few drinks the trading gets "interesting" :D

That's a board game I still want to check out. I want to venture further into board games, but my primary playing partner is my GF...and she basically likes Scrabble, Monopoly, 30 Seconds and Battle of the Sexes. I saw so many epic board games at rAge that has bothered me ever since.

Yeah, Settlers needs to be 3 people or more I think, because of the trading. If you;re two people, the other person can deny you cards and thereby deny you a win (or you will sit in a deadlock for hours).

Another fun, tabletop game is Cranium. That's more like a party game, with 4 colors each representing a category:

Creative Cat: Pictionary, blindfolded pictionary and clay sculpting
Data Head: True or False, multiple choice, or a question
Word Worm: Spelling, reverse spelling and anagrams
Star Performer: Charades, humming a song, and acting

You roll a dice, do one of the above (based on the card you draw of the above color) and move on if you are right. It is so much fun!

I'll check Cranium out, seems like a lot of fun.
