Fermi specs and prices officially confirmed.. and they're not pretty.

Hey guys,

looks like some of the rumours are true and some of them aren't.

Rumour: Fermi will have a "neutered" 480 SP - False, it has the full 512.

Rumour: Fermi will be almost double the power of a 5870 - False, internal benchmarks show 5-10% more performance over a 5870, not great for a showing more than 6 months later.

Rumour: Fermi TDP is out of hand - True, TDP has now been confirmed at a staggering 295W. Keep in mind the 5970 has a TDP of 294W! And the 5870 is only 188W.

Rumour: Price to be between $400 and $450 - False, suggested price for the 480 is $499, a full $100 more than most 5870s you can find on Newegg.

Now you have to ask yourself if you're willing to shell out an extra $100 (and expect a price cut from AMD to further this gap) for a card that gives you as little as 5% more performance, with a TDP a full 107W higher. That's not to mention possible heat issues, and what this board idles at.

I must say things aren't looking great for Fermi at this point, it's a bit disappointing to be honest. They're also planning a dual-GPU card to follow, expect a monstrous TDP on that thing.

Besides the price that is going to be a real joke locally, I am concerned about the power consumption. I have a 1000 Watt PSU, top quality and all, but with this things power consumption there is NO way I'll be able to run it along side a 980X i7 CPU. Nvidia have really gone all out to shoot themselves in the foot here.

I think we all have had enough with the show boating:rolleyes:. Its unlikely that Fermi will be a huge success

So you're one of those people who throw rocks at people driving nice cars? Bleh. Whatever mate.

I'm talking hypothetically. I don't own a 980X yet and based on the benchmarks that's coming out it seems very difficult to justify its purchase. I'm talking in a nice, informative manner. Cool your heels buster brown.

Sure what kind of a daft comment is that. Dude lets get to our senses about that one. I cant really justify purchasing the 980x. Has the price been released yet?

Soz, I am not in the greatest of moods

I noticed! I'm sick with flu (again) at work and you're chewing my left nut. Sigh. Anyways, no, the price has not been released locally but I'm suspecting the same as what the 975 cost which was about R10500 dealer price....probably more expensive than that. I've seriously been considering rather going for the 975, especially since the price came down on it substantially. My wedding coming up is the royal hoover of money suckers at the moment though :(

Hey man, my apologies. You're got a wedding coming up? yours?

How come you at work if you have the flu? Yeah hopefully that comes down a bit more. R10500 is a little pricey for the 975, but surely the 980X will be more than R10500, unfortunately.

I have been waiting for these cards to come out to make my choice between this and ATI so this pretty much settles it 5970 it is.

980x costs $999 in the US - so r10k is about right.

That's what the 975 cost 2 weeks ago, but then the suppliers dropped the price by R2500. Obviously they're making room for the 980X to come in at the 975's old price of R10500. So yeah, now you can pick up the 975 for about R8000....but when you think about it like that, doesn't it make MORE sense to then rather buy the 960 and just overclock it to 975 speeds for half the price?

The only real thing that made the 980X special to me is the 6 cores over the 4 cores....that is a cool factor. But benchmarks are not showing the 2 additional cores any love, which then means that they're not really worth it, yet.

@Rob - Yeah dude, been together with the to-be Mrs. for about 8 years now...it's about time. 7th of May is DA BEEEG ONE.

Add: Oh and to answer the question of why I'm at work with the flu: So I can give them some of their own flippen germs back seeing as I probably got it from this place.

Yeah clockspeed you might as well get a 920 and oc it - it'll surpass a 975 with a bit of luck. But the additional cores and 32nm benefits of 980 can't be beaten. Benchmarks do show than when the extra cores are coded for, they offer a massive benefit. I can totally see why someone would want this cpu. Sorry - some people like to spend their money on cars, some people like to spend on PC components.

Seems like they might be lowering the entry level prices to $450/350 for the 480/470 respectively. This might put them in a more competitive position relative to ATI I hope. Now about that little issue of the TDP...

Yeah I wonder, that is weird. They don't actually list it as being in stock though.

And jasong, keep in mind that that article is older than the one I posted about the prices. (16th vs 18th of March)

So it seems that the $450 was more of a rumour, $499 more of a confirmed price.

Although with this Fermi business, who the hell knows?

$450/350 would make them competitive with ATI. $500/400 would price them out of the market. Whether true or not I'd hate to see this entire generation end up as a no contest handover to ATI.

Really looking forward to the price drops in the GPU sector, as I will reserve all judgment for when the card is released...

It looks like nVidia 5xxx series all over again. Now if they stick to their track record then their next generation cards will be awesome. :D
