Hey guys,
looks like some of the rumours are true and some of them aren't.
Rumour: Fermi will have a "neutered" 480 SP - False, it has the full 512.
Rumour: Fermi will be almost double the power of a 5870 - False, internal benchmarks show 5-10% more performance over a 5870, not great for a showing more than 6 months later.
Rumour: Fermi TDP is out of hand - True, TDP has now been confirmed at a staggering 295W. Keep in mind the 5970 has a TDP of 294W! And the 5870 is only 188W.
Rumour: Price to be between $400 and $450 - False, suggested price for the 480 is $499, a full $100 more than most 5870s you can find on Newegg.
Now you have to ask yourself if you're willing to shell out an extra $100 (and expect a price cut from AMD to further this gap) for a card that gives you as little as 5% more performance, with a TDP a full 107W higher. That's not to mention possible heat issues, and what this board idles at.
I must say things aren't looking great for Fermi at this point, it's a bit disappointing to be honest. They're also planning a dual-GPU card to follow, expect a monstrous TDP on that thing.
