Killing Like a Girl: The Invisible Girl Gamer - Research

or have our ways to developing strict friendships :p

I know this is from a far back post but im catching up on this thread and just had to add my 2 cents (TROLL :P) on this comment... That evil thing of which you speak... Its called the Friend Zone! and its a real bish no matter whether you're a douche bag or a genuine oke XD just putting that out there XD

for the girl on your team to flash some skin right before she spits fire at the dumbstruck nerds against her, that have never felt the warmth of a womans touch, and kills them all :)

Xero... dude, i was in stitches XD well played!

If I may ask one question:

Why do guys want to see more girl gamers on their servers / lobbies / lanning committees?

Purely out of interest.

In my opinion... to mix things up. One of those things is watching fellow guys have their behinds torn asunder by girls in general. Nothing is more grounding for any guy than having his ass handed to him by a girl. PERIOD. And i know a few guys that could use one of those reality checks.

We want more friends and have some possibility for a live partner that has the same interest/hobby. And some1 that would understand were we come from and not just see gaming in a negative angle.

To expand on Weasley's comment, a better diversity of friends in terms of gender in the gaming community. Sure interacting with each other IRL allows for the possibility of more in-depth relations but thats not why we're here, we're here to game with like minded individuals regardless of gender, etc.

This is a theme that has come up quite a bit in this thread and i just want to state (being a guy myself) that there is WAAAAAAAY too much testosterone flying around online these days... everyone rages, its very easy to rage, but some guys just take it way to far, and because of what? that guy has a higher number than me?! OH NOES!!! lol sorry im trolling again X(

But to add some of what i think and hope is relevant to the topic... Girl gamers kick A$$! ive seen a few girls at lans and have played against them in CoD and dota and have had my a$$ thoroughly handed to me on a silver platter, many times over and its been cool to actually talk to some of them and game with them. I also find it really cool that they take it seriously. So any ladies that be following this thread, KEEP IT UP AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS!! :P to quote a particularly famous D.Guetta track... "Where them girls at??” XD (sorry couldn’t help myself )

But again, another thing thats been brought up is that most testosterone filled guys have to prance around and show off for any female in the immediate vicinity... so going on personal experience for this one...
I know a couple of girls that game, but they are the Sims kind of gamer girl which is a tad unfortunate... but i convinced some of them to come and see what our LANs were like with a few mates and myself. That part was awesome, i taught some of them how to play games like quake and crysis wars and they all were enjoying it, until my mates started to pass comments, cat calls and show off their manly powers in game and out. It got so out of hand in the end that all the girls left and havnt come lanning with me since.

And also just to put it out there, IRL meetings are awesome! Regardless of how many ladies and gents are there, so any durbanites here, whose coming to DBNGamers this Friday night? :D

I apologize profusely for this insanely long post, but just putting it out there :P

RAWR!!!! :P

- Do you feel there are some serious female gamers out there? Why?

Yes. I enjoy videogames. I've recently started playing multiplayer games, and have found that I am very good at some of them.

- Have you ever played a female gamer? How did you know?

Yeah, when we had a free period in Computer Studies class, the boys would play multiplayer games, and we sometimes joined in for kicks. I've also played a couple in competitive games online.

- Are you a female gamer? If so, do you care to tell us what games you play?

Mostly Role-Playing games (I love Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Bloodlines, Dragon Age, Mass Effect etc.), but I've started branching out recently. I've been playing online games such as Starcraft 2, Space Marine and Diablo 3, among others.

- Are you a serious female gamer, i.e. how often do you play?

I play when I have time. I recently moved here, so I don't have a decent job yet (I'm a bartender at the moment), so I have more free time on my hands than I am used to. I occasionally play for around 2 hours at night.

- Did you know you were playing a female gamer? How did you know?

Didn't you already ask this?

- Does your mom, sister, girlfriend, spouse or aunt game?

My boyfriend plays some games (action games mostly).

- Do you suspect some psuedonyms to belong to girl gamers but stop wondering because chances are you would never find out and just decide that it is not a female one because girls do not do gaming anyway?

I don't think it matters. Must of us just want to be left alone and get on with the game.

- If you are a male gamer, would you ask a female gamer out on a date?

Odd question. Why wouldn't they, assuming they're able to get uh... regular dates?

- If you are a female gamer, have you ever been asked out on a date via the in game chat/text facility by a fellow gamer?

Yes I have.

- Girls, when you were online (in the game) were you ever confused for a male gamer?

Yes, sometimes I choose vaguely masculine-sounding names because I don't want to be bugged about it. It doesn't really matter to me either way.

What is this female gamer? New specie?

...I just game and that's all that matters. Who cares about gender or platform.

You must add your Blizzard Battletag to the MyGaming Diablo 3 tag pool, get some monster slaying buddies.

Ok, I know I've already answered this question, but I've been pondering it, and I think I've come to a realisation. It might already have been touched on, but here goes.

I think a lot of women see gaming as a childish hobby, and they just don't get what we see in it.
If there were more women involved, who understood what we get from gaming and shared the passion that we have for it, then it wouldn't be written of as ag, boys and their toys, and just be gaming, ya that's something that some people enjoy doing

er, bit late as always but this thread caught my eye only now.

With the above - this is a main reason my gaming hobby / lifestyle remains somewhat hidden. In only very recent years have I started opening up with it to other women who don't game. (aquintances/work collegues) I STILL get the giggling about it and the reactions that it's a childish habit and that I will grow out of it when I have a baby (seriously, is that what life is still all about in these times?) - The thing is I won't - not ever. It's not something you just switch off, it is a lifestyle I grew up with and will continue hopefully till death do us part. There is very little understanding or common ground that I can gain between these types of women. My best mates have come to accept it and actually ask about it and have always known which is why I love them to bits. It makes me angry that people can be so close minded about it. Everyone has their own habits that makes them happy.

Answering the questions from first post:

- Do you feel there are some serious female gamers out there? Why?
Yep, most definitely and lot's of them. There are competitive female clans and female players who game for the sake of gaming just like any guy would.

- Have you ever played a female gamer? How did you know?
Several times and have made a few good female friends that met online through playing games and forums.

- Are you a female gamer? If so, do you care to tell us what games you play?
yes, I play a wide range from FPS, MMO (although not lately), RTS, Adventure, RPG, Indie, Sim.
I couldn't list them all but the main favorites have gone through over the years include Battlefield (all), CoD (just about all of them), Guildwars, Arma-DayZ! (current addiction), Fallout, GTA, Minecraft, Sims, Civ 4/5, L4D 1&2, Aion, STO and the list goes on and on and on!

- Are you a serious female gamer, i.e. how often do you play?
I would say so but I don't play competively. I've joined more social clans over the years mainly for the teamwork.
I play a lot - at least a few hours a day and weekends more. I will go through a stage of not playing for a week due to other commitments but gaming is my no 1 source of entertainment.

- Did you know you were playing a female gamer? How did you know?
well TS is usually a dead give away. But I don't really look out for that.

- Does your mom, sister, girlfriend, spouse or aunt game?
My boyfriend plays games sometimes but far more casually, he enjoys fps only. I have the problem where he gets pissed off with me if I play a game for to long so I get exactly where guys are coming from when they are hindered from their hobby. I guess just need to find that balance always which is what try and aim for.

- Do you suspect some psuedonyms to belong to girl gamers but stop wondering because chances are you would never find out and just decide that it is not a female one because girls do not do gaming anyway?
I don't actively look out for other female gamers and don't read up to much on nicks. I like the approach of treating anyone who is playing a game as just another person to kill if on opposing team.

- If you are a female gamer, have you ever been asked out on a date via the in game chat/text facility by a fellow gamer?
not really no. I've had plenty of annoying guys messing around who think they are being hilarious. But it's easy to ignore.

- Girls, when you were online (in the game) were you ever confused for a male gamer?
yes, quite a few times. My gaming nick is neutral and can be used for either gender. In a general game where I don't know the people playing I don't bother correcting them as it makes no difference. On TS it becomes apparent that I'm a chick. I usually stick with people that I get to know and have made some nice friendships because of it. Recently because of DayZ I have made some more and we all just get on which is awesome. I like being treated as one of the guys and the only reason I keep playing with the same people or stick with a new group of players is because they do this - that doesn't mean I want to be treated like a butch macho chick on steriods or anything like that, but by having that female touch that can still be treated with respect and can be joked about makes playing the games even more fun.

ffs - post is waaaaay to long, this is what happens when bored at work
