Ok, I know I've already answered this question, but I've been pondering it, and I think I've come to a realisation. It might already have been touched on, but here goes.
I think a lot of women see gaming as a childish hobby, and they just don't get what we see in it.
If there were more women involved, who understood what we get from gaming and shared the passion that we have for it, then it wouldn't be written of as ag, boys and their toys, and just be gaming, ya that's something that some people enjoy doing
er, bit late as always but this thread caught my eye only now.
With the above - this is a main reason my gaming hobby / lifestyle remains somewhat hidden. In only very recent years have I started opening up with it to other women who don't game. (aquintances/work collegues) I STILL get the giggling about it and the reactions that it's a childish habit and that I will grow out of it when I have a baby (seriously, is that what life is still all about in these times?) - The thing is I won't - not ever. It's not something you just switch off, it is a lifestyle I grew up with and will continue hopefully till death do us part. There is very little understanding or common ground that I can gain between these types of women. My best mates have come to accept it and actually ask about it and have always known which is why I love them to bits. It makes me angry that people can be so close minded about it. Everyone has their own habits that makes them happy.
Answering the questions from first post:
- Do you feel there are some serious female gamers out there? Why?
Yep, most definitely and lot's of them. There are competitive female clans and female players who game for the sake of gaming just like any guy would.
- Have you ever played a female gamer? How did you know?
Several times and have made a few good female friends that met online through playing games and forums.
- Are you a female gamer? If so, do you care to tell us what games you play?
yes, I play a wide range from FPS, MMO (although not lately), RTS, Adventure, RPG, Indie, Sim.
I couldn't list them all but the main favorites have gone through over the years include Battlefield (all), CoD (just about all of them), Guildwars, Arma-DayZ! (current addiction), Fallout, GTA, Minecraft, Sims, Civ 4/5, L4D 1&2, Aion, STO and the list goes on and on and on!
- Are you a serious female gamer, i.e. how often do you play?
I would say so but I don't play competively. I've joined more social clans over the years mainly for the teamwork.
I play a lot - at least a few hours a day and weekends more. I will go through a stage of not playing for a week due to other commitments but gaming is my no 1 source of entertainment.
- Did you know you were playing a female gamer? How did you know?
well TS is usually a dead give away. But I don't really look out for that.
- Does your mom, sister, girlfriend, spouse or aunt game?
My boyfriend plays games sometimes but far more casually, he enjoys fps only. I have the problem where he gets pissed off with me if I play a game for to long so I get exactly where guys are coming from when they are hindered from their hobby. I guess just need to find that balance always which is what try and aim for.
- Do you suspect some psuedonyms to belong to girl gamers but stop wondering because chances are you would never find out and just decide that it is not a female one because girls do not do gaming anyway?
I don't actively look out for other female gamers and don't read up to much on nicks. I like the approach of treating anyone who is playing a game as just another person to kill if on opposing team.
- If you are a female gamer, have you ever been asked out on a date via the in game chat/text facility by a fellow gamer?
not really no. I've had plenty of annoying guys messing around who think they are being hilarious. But it's easy to ignore.
- Girls, when you were online (in the game) were you ever confused for a male gamer?
yes, quite a few times. My gaming nick is neutral and can be used for either gender. In a general game where I don't know the people playing I don't bother correcting them as it makes no difference. On TS it becomes apparent that I'm a chick. I usually stick with people that I get to know and have made some nice friendships because of it. Recently because of DayZ I have made some more and we all just get on which is awesome. I like being treated as one of the guys and the only reason I keep playing with the same people or stick with a new group of players is because they do this - that doesn't mean I want to be treated like a butch macho chick on steriods or anything like that, but by having that female touch that can still be treated with respect and can be joked about makes playing the games even more fun.
ffs - post is waaaaay to long, this is what happens when bored at work
