I am aware of the fact that there were two posts made about FireFall upon it's inception, however, since the game will be entering Open BETA next month and since it's an MMOFPS, I assumed that peeps wouldn't mind me creating this post in the MMO section for those who may be trying it for the first time or continuing where they left off.

FireFall uses a heavily modified version of the Offset Engine from Offset Software that was sold to Intel in February 2008. The engine was originally built for Offset Software's FPS game Project Offset that was cancelled mid 2010 by Intel. Intel was trying to use the engine to showcase what Larrabee was capable of. The game was under development for over five years until Intel dropped the project due to the failure of Larrabee.

Created by seasoned developers including the team-lead for World of Warcraft and the lead-designer of Tribes 1+2, FireFall’s combat is fast paced, furious and plays like a top tier FPS. The game is equally an MMO, plunging hundreds of players into an all-out PvE war against the Chosen army. Firefall features both a large, open-world cooperative campaign that can be shared with hundreds of other players as well as a competitive Multiplayer component that will incorporate features such as ladders, tournaments, clans and leagues.

Background:

FireFall takes place on Earth, but it is an Earth transformed. The year is 2233. A highly efficient form of energy was discovered by utilizing the resource Crystite. The overuse of Crystite led to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, an energy storm that has engulfed the majority of the planet. Recently, humanity has been fighting for survival against a race called the Chosen, who emerged from the Melding with only one known goal, the destruction of the human race. Players assume the role of a surviving human in the eye of the Melding storm.

Uniting in the form of "Armies", players need to collect resources to craft weapons and vehicles in order to suppress the apocalyptic threat of the Chosen invasion. Nano-technology suits of armour called Battleframes enhance the capabilities of the human race, allowing players to jet across battlefields, wield a variety of exotic weapons and employ special abilities to reclaim the world.

PvE:

The PvE environment is the primary location for resource collection, either by Thumping, detonating Resource Deposits, completing World Events or by searching for Supply Crates. Moreover, whenever a creature is killed, it may drop a small amount of Crystite. Some resources may also be obtained from PvP matches.

Missions are Firefall's means of guiding the player through the storyline. Most locations have their own storyline mission chain that introduce the player to characters, area and lore; eventually guiding him to new locations.

Players may participate in World Events in the form of 'Dynamic Encounter Systems'. During a World Event, players in the relevant zone are invited to participate, and all participating players will receive a reward if the event ends in the players' favour.

Here is the BETA map of FireFall's content progress. I've suggested (via surveys) to Red 5 that I feel it's necessary to include more PvE/end-game content. In other words, more missions, world bosses (like TERA's "BAMs") and dungeons (caves, deserted stations, crashed space ships {Ala Warframe})

PvP:

Orbital Comm Tower (Sabotage)
Win Condition: Capture three objectives
Time Limit: 10 mins per round
Team Size: 1v1 - 7v7

Blackwater Harvester (Harvester)
Win Condition: First team to score 600 points
Time Limit: None
Team Size: 1v1 - 12v12

Sunken Harbor/Moisture Farm (Team Deathmatch)
Win Condition: First team to get 25 kills
Time Limit: 25 mins
Team Size: 1v1 - 5v5

Classes:

Classes in Firefall are called "Battleframes". Battleframes are at the core of an ARES Operator’s arsenal, determining both the role that the Operator plays in the world, and their functionality in combat. The Battleframe serves as an extension of its pilot, allowing them to survive in the harsh environments of New Eden while battling against the countless dangers that exist. Each Battleframe is designed with specific combat or support purposes, though the Operator’s choice of frame does not limit them to one role. ARES Operators are able to switch freely from one Battleframe class to another at any time in order to fit the needs of any situation.

There are five available Battleframes to date:

Our clan has played FireFall from the get-go. Most of us purchased Founder's Packs so that we could play on a regular basis. Though we haven't been playing 24/7, we regularly revisit the game — which is improving in leaps and bounds. We're in the process of developing the FireFall South Africa Community Website and Facebook Community Page, however, we've had to prioritise the development of our own site before pursuing this further.

Grim Wolves is currently giving away between 10-20 permanent Closed BETA keys (upon receiving the key and downloading the client, you'll be able to play immediately and have unlimited game access). If FireFall has peaked your interest and you'd like to receive a key, we ask that you "Like" our Facebook Community Page (and, if possible, the "FireFall South Africa" Community Page) and post your comments under the relevant giveaway post. An admin will then private message you asking for your email address so that they can send you your key (unfortunately, the key has to be sent directly from Founder to email recipient via the FireFall BETA site). Additionally, if you receive a key and would like to join our Army, please open the "Army" interface in-game, search for "Grim Wolves" and "Apply". Alternatively, you can send me a MyGaming private message with your IGN and I can add/invite you.

There have already been three recipients thus far: Wyvern, Glordit and Nimatek! We would love it if more of you joined us in our war against the Chosen in New Eden!

Thank you for your time.
At ease! ᕙ(`▽´),

Some questions:

1. what makes this different from Defiance?
2. What kind of depth is involved in skill and stat development?
3. Is there a max level and what happens when you hit it?
4. Are there grouped instances and how do you access them? (i.e. dungeon finder or spam LFG in a channel?)
5. Is the beta client going to roll over to open beta and then launch?

I do know Firefall does not have "console-port"-itis. So for starters it got a proper chat/social system that works with *gasp* a mouse and a keyboard.

Then there's the jetpack stuff...

I guess a video like this will tell you alot. It's actually alot of things different from Defiance, alot more strategy in there. I almost want to say "Planetside PvE" .

The only reason why i haven't played it yet, because it has been in beta for YEARS, and i did not want to sink time into a game that does not have a release date within a few months of playing in the beta.

1. what makes this different from Defiance?
Art Style, element of humour, plot, environment, overall gameplay

SIMILARITIES:

Skill-based shooter at the core
Emphasis on team-based gameplay
Sci-Fi themed
Large open PvE environment
PvE missions
PvP lobbies
Supplemental skills
Crafting
Vehicles
Invading enemy aliens
Area Missions

DIFFERENCES:

FireFall:

PC
Still in BETA
Free to Play (with optional item shop)
Unique storyline, monsters, environment
Whimsical and humorous
Has a unique, cel-shaded art style (bright and colourful)
Clean, easy-to-use UI and skill point distribution system
Single playable race
More in-depth character customisation post-creation
Gliders
Jumpjets (great freedom of horizontal/vertical movement in the world)
Space Shuttles (fast transport to locations)
One character may level all five Battleframes and switch between them at any time (even during combat.)
Available content limited to: PvE Missions; Chosen Invasions, Chosen Incursions; Melding Tornados; Resource Collection (Thumping); World Events; PvP Arenas

Defiance:

Multi-Platform
Released
Buy to Play (R595.09)
Pay to Play system
Unique storyline, monsters, environment
More serious
Standard 3D graphical style (dark and gritty)
UI built primarily for consoles
Multiple playable races
More in-depth character customisation upon creation
Open-ended class system (roles and abilities based on gear)
Dynamic content
The ability to level-up weapons
TV series attached (show and the game affect each other)

2. What kind of depth is involved in skill and stat development?
One character can suit up in all five Battleframes, however, each frame needs to be levelled individually.

3. Is there a max level and what happens when you hit it?
FireFall is Tier-based, not level-based. E.g. Your character may have a Tier 1 Assault Battleframe, but a Tier
3 Biotech Battleframe (Tiers may also be purchased for Red Beans). Much like Warframe, It takes time to level frames, so it's unlikely that one could spam to max level in a hurry. There are five available Battleframes, each with three variations. Ultimately, one character can be 15 "classes" at once, switching between them at any given time.

Defiance offers four starting classes, all of which fit into common shooter archetypes: There's the Veteran (your basic soldier), the Outlaw (your basic mercenary), the Machinist (your basic engineer) and the Survivalist (your basic recon). Each class has its own specific starting weapon (the Survivalist, for example, begins with a sniper rifle) and outfit, but class selection has no bearing on the weapons you can use in-game and the skills you can acquire as you level. As you kill monsters and complete missions, you earn EGO Points. Collect enough Ego Points and you'll earn a new perk on the EGO grid, a collection of abilities and enhancements to your existing skillset. All character classes have access to all perks and skills on the EGO grid, allowing you to build your character however you see fit.

4. Are there grouped instances and how do you access them? (i.e. dungeon finder or spam LFG in a channel?)
The game is still in BETA, so much PvE content is still pending (see BETA map).

5. Is the beta client going to roll over to open beta and then launch?
Yes. AFAIK there will not be any character wipes and the game will roll over into Open BETA, and then release.

Ultimately, it is extremely hard to compare a release to a BETA when there is still development being done and content on the way. Red 5 are still sending out surveys, which means that there will be additions/changes for sure.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown and comparison Blackswan. It gives me much food for thought. I am downloading the beta client now, will take me a few days. I take it the closed beta finishes this weekend? I read on the FF forums that the beta clients will be used and patched through to release, so my 80k/s download now is an investment it seems ;-)

I am keen to play FF, I see the next beta is on the 9th of July, some time to go still. If you buy a founders pack, you get to play in any beta I assume, but only when the beta is live? Stupid question but still, there it is.

More and more this seems like a successor to TR, I loved TR and this looks to be a great similar game.

Thanks again for your detailed posts!

My pleasure. :) No. If you buy a Founders Pack, you get x5 keys to share with whomever you choose and get to play immediately. Those with regular Closed BETA keys will not be able to play again until the Open BETA (July 9th 2013). Those with permanent Founders Pack keys get unlimited BETA access.

Sorry, still got me confused there. Founders pack can play this game all the time, 24/7 and not just in closed beta times (this weekend)? And there is no whipe for this "founders beta" on release?

Yes and Yes! I've had access for the last 6 months or so. Those are the keys we are giving away. :)

Yes and Yes! :)

Wow, consider me hooked. When I got the beta client downloaded, will look into a founder pack. R200 does not seem like a bad idea to throw at this game to help it off the ground. See you in game sometime this week!

How big is the client download? I noticed this morning that I have a beta invite for the weekend, but I don't want to download it if it's like 10GB or something and then I can only play it for half a day.
