FireFall

If you roll on Mindflayer, gooi me an add: @scaryjaneza :)

Cool, will do.

Thanks for the add. Will send you a guild invite next time I see you online. Got quite a few active SA players playing at the moment.

I should really just start playing it, didnt have that much time to play. I just did the tutorial so far.

Since it's still in BETA, there's not *a hell of a lot* of PvE to do solo. It's much more fun playing as a group. We should organise a time where we all log in and jam.

Awesome, thanks, will most likely play for a bit tonight. I'm still new to the while MMO thing (tried LOTRO years ago but didn't play long) so I'm still lost with the finer workings of an MMO, but I am really enjoying Neverwinter so far. Have a lvl 10 Trickster Rogue ATM.

Also tried out Firefall yesterday but I had no idea what I was doing. Definitely agree with everyone that says it needs a better tutorial. Tooke forever to figure out how to use the thumper thing.

Just a stupid question, I like asking them, rather than look stupid later:

Progression in Firefall is basically: use xp to upgrade the battelframe you are in, you upgrade the CPU, Mass, Power stats. To upgrade existing abilities/weapons or to get new ones, you have to craft them with resources you gather. These abilities/weapons are limited to the size of your suit CPU, Mass and Power stats.

Does this about summarise the progression? I cannot find anything anywhere about getting new or better abilities using the suit xp so I assume you have to craft them and then equip them if your suit stats allow.

Definately a game ( at this stage) that demands that you set your own goals both short and long term, it is a sandbox after all. Eve was the same, although there PVP was a big goal. Its best if you set yourself a short term goal: get x CPU/mass/power to get y item then work towards it by gathering resources to make y item and xp to advance to the required CPU/mass/power.

I am enjoying that aspect tremendously, no more quests handed out etc. Very refreshing.

As far as i can tell , yes. You can obviously buy more Battleframes which are not part of the default 5. You will see there's more "advanced" battleframes in the Garage.

Apparently the progression trees were more complicated in the past (and i saw blogs moaning about this) , but right now they're pretty simple.

So in a way it's quite simple.

1. You gain XP by doing missions, invasions (this includes upgrading bases etc), thumping (your own or from helping other players) and dynamic events ON the Battleframe you wear ONLY.
2.You gain resources by thumping, harvesting nodes and rewards from #1
3.You need XP to upgrade your battleframe
4.You need resources to craft improvements to latch onto your battleframe
5.Your battleframe needs to be upgraded BEFORE you can craft the items that improve your battleframe
6.Some craftables are not related to your battleframe (consumables typically).

And round and round it goes. The crafting recipes itself is probably the only complicated thing here, as alot of items need sub-items (again which needs to be crafted) and so forth. You can add optional components to improve the item you're crafting (it's those extra blocks to put in items, as far as i can tell, you only need to put something in the red blocks at minimum etc)

So essentially, you must like the actual gameplay (running, shooting, killing, thumping) otherwise you'll be bored pretty quickly. I expect alot of "grind" with this game in its current state, since you are essentially doing the equivalent of "dailies" and "farming" to progress.

Even in its current state, i've found alot of solo content, or rather content that you can do "on your own with others". Simple example, you don't need to put up a thumper, you can just see on the map where others are thumping and join them . I'm not aware of an xp penalty if 10 people stand around a thumper vs. 1 person.

I do however feel, they might want to add some depth with the progression. This implies more goals to work towards. Even EVE have some goals to work towards (i.e. "get biggest ship" , "make alot of money" , "mine extremely rare minerals" etc etc). In Firefall it's kinda unclear what one should be aiming towards, crafting a vehicle? Then what?

I guess a lot of people were watching the E3 presentations.

Psh , no one can afford what they're punting at E3 ;-) . Anyhow, the map i was on was totally overrun by The Chosen (the enemy NPC faction) , only Copa was safe ....actually not even that was safe, constantly these zombies popping in the middle of town.

I still don't understand how the town defences and stuff work. What does the "Power Level" of the town do? I was watching how Copa's level kept dropping and wondered what happens when it reaches 0. Also how do you mount turrets on those mount points in town? I was with some other guy and tried to take back a watchtower but the incoming forces is just too much for us, if we could mount some turrets it would help .

I probably spent most of my playtime just fighting Chosen. Was in a group of 5 or so and we could take back large parts of the maps , but we couldn't keep it up, the enemy would take back the towers behind us not long after we were there. I assume it's to do with not having any defenses build up or something?

Luckily if they take over a town/tower you can still sneak in and use the terminals (they should fix that) and you can generally clear a town solo without retaking it. If you activate the beacon to retake then it's like they drop an enemy army on you, so in the absence of help i had to stop myself from activating those beacons and just take out the few guards walking around town.

There's also alot more roaming enemies (snipers especially nasty) if you don't control towns/towers, so exploring becomes quite tricky. Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot of mobs to aggro (a good thing), something i hate in other MMOs how they would purposely scatter aggro mobs every 2 steps to force you to fight something every 2 steps. In Firefall you can generally travel rather peacefully and really explore without 10 mobs constantly on your heels....unless of course it's controlled by the enemy.

There was no one on other than me and Diabolus last night from SA, Grim Wolves was empty ;-(

HAH! I said you need to shout when you're on and we'll join you! Remember we've kinda been playing for 6 months, so we've seen all of the solo play. Plus you have our Warframe team to blame for their "aggressive key runs!" ;) Oh, and we are also trying to establish our Dragon's Prophet guild as well on "Osira" EU. That's probably why no one has been in FireFall.

Add me on Raptr: http://raptr.com/-BlackSwan-/about
Or Steam: BlackSwanZA

Wow 6 months? You guys must be thoroughly bored with this game by now, I can see why you are not playing ;-P. It is very rare for an MMO to hold me more than 3 months.

HA HA! Not six months solid - six months on and off. The content hasn't changed that much, so we were basically waiting for the PvE side of things to heat up a bit. :)

Had my first co-op experience last night. Me and Diabolus set out in a random direction and on the way we had various adventures in places that were not marked at all with mission icons. At the end of the evening I was really impressed at how well the game does sandbox. We did not feel as if we were playing on the rails at all.

We didn't have to compare quest logs to see what we could do together, we did not have to compare levels to see if it would be a challenge or not, we just kicked a$$ and triumphed over adversity and learned how to mesh our current loadouts and frames in a fighting unit.

We had some close calls, some easy exploring and got a lot of xp and could test our abilities in a variety of unforseen tactical situations.

2 hours of great fun.

This game is growing on me, definitely an MMO that will be spiced to perfection with good friends and willing guild mates.

Yea that was alot of fun. It's also nice how the game shows you all the other players close by directly on your HUD (not on the mini map) and gives info about others thumping/mining in the area. I think the map size is just the right size that even when you feel you're at a remote outpost you still see players show up for missions that are broadcast.

PS Shrike, there's actually a dropship to Copa from that last outpost where we logged . If you see these big round helipad type of things near a tower then a dropship will eventually land there. So at least it's not a long trek back.

Irony is, in all this we never even got to crafting or even upgrading our battleframes. I'll probably investigate some tonight since i want to modify my frame a little. I got me the Recluse battleframe, which is part of the Biotech (Healer) battleframe group but it does not have any healing abilities. It shoots poison AOE/Dots . As far as i know you can replace some of the abilities with the stock Accord Biotech abilities once you crafted the add-ons , so i am hoping i can add some of the stock healing onto the Recluse. Now that will be one bad-ass battleframe with some survivability too.

Oh for those that's interested, here's the dropship routes. The dropships aren't exactly very fast, but it's an easy ride if you want to do some sight seeing. Just make sure you bail if it goes into the melding. Can probably use the dropship as a gliding pad too, if you bail you glide out .

This is also a good indication of the size of the world in Firefall. The blue stuff is the "melding" and that moves , so the map is actually larger and there's areas beneath this melding. We saw these amplifiers that we assume can push this wall back, needs some crafted items, will still explore that.

Figured out that you can unmount the stock items from your accord battleframe by selecting it in the garage, selecting the ability and replacing it with "None". Now when you select your advanced frame, you will be able to equip the unmounted accord ability. Saves crafting the stock one.

Thanks for the routes and the info about dropships!

Absolutely! As discussed on the FireFall Community page, Grim Wolves will most definitely be more active in New Eden once more PvE content has been added. Friday is FFXIV:ARR's final BETA weekend, but once that has passed we'll log in and do so some hard-level thumping with you!

Next thing that could make this game even better: some kind of world permanence by players. Either housing or outposts set up by players. Or they can add things that you need or really want that can only found on certain outposts and make them attacked often by Chosen.
