The Decline of Strategy Gaming

I still remember playing the original HoMM, was the shit!! and screw all of ya'll; Eldar all the way:cool:

And did any of you ever play SpellForce?

I might have found a new RTS on the rise, though still a long way from release. Check out some of the vids explaining how it works and so, it's called Banished

Are city builders not considered strategy games? does there have to be death/violence for strategy to occur? :P

Anybody tried the Supreme commander games that are currently on the Humble weekly bundle?

Supreme Commander and SC Forged Alliance are both excellent! Really insane RTS action. Battles will take hours, huge maps, huge everything basically. Would definitely recommend trying it out - although its not everyone's cup of tea.

Supreme Commander 2 was dumbed down for mainstream audiences and isnt as good in my opinion.

The reviews said that was one of the drawbacks of the huge battles- you spend most of the game zoomed out, looking at hundreds of tiny dots lol. Looks interesting anyway

Ya they not to bad. is a lot like total annihilation.

I've heard it's the spiritual successor to Total annihilation

An excellent game series , however the skill cap and learning curve are second only to EVE Online. Be prepared to spend a looooot of time being owned. However the rewards are hefty and they are many

Yeah, it takes a looong time to figure out what the hell is going on XD

They evolved into MOBA and Cheese Crafts.

Evolved you say? :D Dare I say devolved? :D

There are some nice strategy games on the way. Have a look at Planetary annihilation which should be hitting stores some time in December.

Search for Supreme commander 2, you can choose it and 2 other games from those pages and only pay $8.

Any thoughts on XCOM unknown territory? I'm curious!

This quote was never answered, but XCOM enemy unknown is an epic game. It's very very close to being on par with the original games and that's basically as good as it can get these days :) I thoroughly enjoyed it and I secretly hope that they add a few things back from the original in the sequel (enemy within which is launching next month) - stuff like being able to loot bodies in game and being able to use engineering downtime to manufacture items and sell for cash.

Special mention goes to the original series of Rainbow Six games, despite being a FPS I found that to be heavily strategy oriented, especially if you discarded the "default" tactics and created your own path to the objectives...

If you like the original R6 series have a look at Takedown red sabre which launched 2 or 3 weeks ago.

From what I heard the game was completely broken with terrible AI on release day, haven't heard of any patches that came out that fixed the major issues that plagued it. So unless its now decent, I'm still waiting for it to be fixed, but yeah, when I heard about it I was pretty excited :)
