Is it just me or is everyone blind to the obvious?

A necro isn't a thread that's a week old or even three - that's still up for additional posts.

Using the Necroscale,

Bronze Necro: 2 months
Silver Necro: 5/6 months
Gold Necro: 7-12 months
Platinum Necro: 1 year +
Diamond Necro: Any thing higher than 4 years (and yes it's happened)
This

I dont think its particularly bad...although I did have a good laugh at that one dude posting a question in the PS3 comp thread...whahaha
What do you think would be awesome to use with my ps3 a LTE modem or a normal one?

The only reason why you should necro a thread is to add additional info to the topic, or to restart a discussion. When a thread has been dead for a while, I would say rather start a new thread of the same category, but state the reason why you are creating a new thread. I would say any threads on a silver level and upwards are officially dead, and any new conversation can be started within a new thread. You can even go so far as to reference the old thread is you feel that the info in there will be referenced. Just my opinion

And also from experience, people are far more forgiving if you apologise for the necro in advance before adding your 2c.

It's a bit hard for the newer guys when you get bollocked for replying to an old thread - and then you get bollocked for starting a new one because one already exists.
Last time I necroed a thread, I said "I know this is necro, but-"

I have no problem is someone necro's a thread and apologizes for it before adding something constructive to the subject matter.

Yeah it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I think because of the closeness of the community here, it's very difficult for a newbie to enter and be accepted. It took me a while before I even attempted to post in TK. And by then I had already some establishment as a regular member.

TK from the outside feels like shark infested pool, you dare dip your toe into it or else.
Well, that was my feeling in the beginning, lol

Lock a thread after a month or even lock it for that matter? I'd understand if it were controversial, but overreact much? It's not like necro'd threads are pervasive on this forum, are they?

Ignore them and they'll die again. Threads on MyBB get necro'd and yet you don't see members being possessive about them.

It might be a silly question but why is thread necroing bad?

I suppose in some cases it makes sense to necro. Like lets say Audiosurf gets an update and then we resurrect the existing Audiosurf thread to continue talking about it. Or should a new one be created especially for the update? What if there isn't even an update and you just want to talk about Audiosurf?

Also, how old must a thread be to be considered dead?

The only times when thread necroing is bad in my opinion is if the necro post doesn't add anything worthwhile but even that's debatable because the person may only want to continue that discussion without starting a new one.

I really don't see thread necroing as something to get upset about. But that's my opinion of course.

I'm glad that someone else points this out for a change. There's a large-ish group of members on the forum who seem to have made it their job to make it difficult for new members to fit in around here, which includes being excessively rude to new members across the board and running around like little policemen looking for any 'wrongdoing.' As a relatively new-ish member myself I've had run-ins with some of these people on more than one occasion and I've called them out on it every time.

I don't think these people realise how awful they make it for new members to be here. Every time someone joins a new forum, whether it's their first forum or their 500th, it takes time to learn the ropes, learn the people and settle yourself in. This isn't made much easier when there's a self-appointed forum policeman following you around like a bloodhound.

I strongly believe that this naked hostility from parts of the older community is part of why we don't seem to have a very good new user retention rate. As I've said countless times before, when you see a user posting in a way that you think contravenes the forum rules, RBP his post and move on. Don't take it into your own hands by posting and calling him/her out on it, because you're only making things worse. Let the moderators deal with it, because that's what they're here for. If it were up to you to take the law (so to speak) into your own hands, you would have been made a moderator.

I actually wish James would start handing out infractions every time one of these self-appointed moderators took the law into his/her own hands. It would kill the hostile atmosphere that new users have to grow in and also reminds these people who the real authorities are around here.

+1 What they said

Rather create a sticky about necros or amending the current posting guidelines/membership starter pack if it really is that much of a concern.

Lol, I find TK to be a post-count-boosting, spam thread for many regulars who complain about newbies doing so across multiple threads.

:p

Oh hell naw, you did not just say that!

not that you're wrong, but it is generally not well received when you point this out. TK is often used as an 'acceptable' way of post padding, but I don't mind too much. At least it's contained to one thread and doesn't spill over onto the rest of the forums.

It seems that way - but it's not. All the informative stuff gets buried in mountains of crap. :)

Yep, like a circle jerk thread for the elders of mygaming.

TK is like a shoutbox ...... we have real time conversations in there. It may seem like post padding but that's the last thing on my mind when I'm conversing with others. And like mentioned, it's confined ;)

There's been a lot of assertion that thread necro is happening all over the place like some sort of epidemic but from my perspective this is hardly the case.

Unfortunately I can't read every single post that's made. This is why we partly rely on people reporting posts.

There have been some reported posts for thread necro, and i have dished out warnings to the guilty parties when justified, and this has corrected their behaviour.

I have also done nothing about many of the reports because they haven't really done anything wrong.

For context, I have a total of 20 reported posts since the competition launched, and this has resulted in me warning two serious necro-posters to stop doing it.

The forum is open to everyone, newcomers and old-timers alike.

I'm also not going to start goosestepping around here like some sort of MyGaming Gestapo and give infractions to every person who says something slightly brash, harsh, or rude.

Supposedly we are all adult human beings and much like any other social setting, people must figure out their own problems amongst themselves. The only time moderators will want to step in is if members are constantly engaging in fights and attacks on one another, creating a hostile environment for everyone in general.

Again, this is why there is a reporting system. If someone has really done something to personally affront you, then take it to moderation.

If someone has necroposted or transgressed one of the etiquette guidelines, then report the post and the mods will make a call.

If you want to address the person directly then go ahead, but don't be a douche about it.

It's probably useful to direct them here: Guide for new MyGaming forum members

Currently the mod team is mainly myself and Dan, but there are other staff who will handle any spambots and the likes if we aren't available.

I've seen quite a few F-bombs recently... Is this allowed?

/Dammit, sorry for the essay. I try to keep it short, but when I look up again I've already written four paragraphs. :(

+1 Old forumite here and still get irritated by them can mention names but won't they know who they are...

some new members just not sure how the forums work. Some forums are chaos maybe they used to that ?

Im guilty of using F-bombs but in a controlled way
