All things Sport

Ooooh, but the women's heptathlon was awesome! Amazing high jump and javelin, with gold being contested in the final event, the 800 m run. Such a good event. I'm so looking forward to the men decathlon too.

To me, the Heptathlon and Decathlon embodies the definition of what an athlete is. Imagine having to train 7 or 10 different events. I mean they are not at world beating performance in any event, but they are good across so many of them that it's astounding. Also, the prettiest and best built people are always found in the heptathlon and decathlon. They are the blue print to the master race for humanity. They are also no humble and share a great spirit with their fellow athletes. Those two are my favourite events at the Olympic Games.

I think the spirit grows naturally from compete alongside these other uber-athletes for 3 to 7 days at a time, and there are only so many athletes who do compete, that it quickly becomes a reasonably close-knit group of people. But it is absolutely inspiring to see the spirit they compete with. The sheer dedication required to just become somewhat good at each of the events is mind boggling. Incredible, I tell you!

Man what a race that was in the motogp yestarday some good scrapping between vinyales crutchlow rossi and marquez yestarday. Watch maveric become champion in the next 2 seasons he's at yamaha. But i think marquez will take it this year 50 points between him and rossi is alot.

And how boring was the f1. Just glad rosberg one and there's only 3 points between him and lewis.

And man tbat game between the bulls and the lions what an upset. Wonder whose gonna play the worst rugby this weekend? South africa or australia

And so its done . . . I don't know what to think of this sale:

US media firm Liberty Media to buy Formula 1

US firm Liberty Media has confirmed it is buying the racing business Formula 1 for $4.4bn (£3.3bn).
The move ends years of speculation about the ownership of the company.
Bernie Ecclestone will remain as chief executive but Chase Carey, vice-chairman of 21st Century Fox, will become the new chairman.
Liberty Media has stakes in several sports and entertainment businesses, including the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball club.
Owned by the billionaire John Malone, Liberty will initially purchase a minority stake in the world's leading motor-racing championship. A full takeover is planned if regulators approve the deal.
The total transaction values the firm at $8bn but includes $4.1bn worth of F1's debt.
Liberty Media is buying the stake from the private equity firm CVC Capital.
CVC has held a stake for the past decade but sold some of its holding in 2012.
It has been criticised for taking considerable profits from the sport, which has suffered from falling TV ratings in recent years.

Analysis: Dan Roan BBC sports editor
This is one of the biggest deals in sports history and one of the most important moments in the history of F1.
Under overlord Bernie Ecclestone's long command - and the last decade of ownership by private equity group CVC - the motorsport series has enjoyed remarkable growth in terms of global popularity, profits and new races.
Liberty Media will hope to build on these strengths, helping the sport gain new fans, especially in the Americas, and to capitalise on new opportunities around marketing, promotion, digital rights and social media.
However, assuming European regulators approve the takeover, there are issues that the new US owners will need to address - the decline in appeal among younger audiences in an ultra-competitive sporting landscape, the rising costs to teams, fans and circuits, and the predictability of races.
Many inside the sport will be relieved to see the back of CVC, which has done very well out of its investment, and excited by the future. But this is also the beginning of the end of Mr Ecclestone's remarkable reign. Inevitably there will be uncertainty.
Ecclestone to stay for 'three more years'
Beginning of the end for Ecclestone?
Ecclestone: The man, the myths and the motors
"We are excited to become part of Formula 1," said Greg Maffei, chief executive of Liberty Media.
"We think our long-term perspective and expertise with media and sports assets will allow us to be good stewards of Formula 1 and benefit fans, teams and our shareholders."
Mr Ecclestone said: "I would like to welcome Liberty Media and Chase Carey to Formula 1 and I look forward to working with them."
Earlier, he said in an interview with Reuters that he had been asked to stay on for three years and would miss the Singapore Grand Prix on 18 September as he needed be in London for the negotiations.
The 85-year-old British businessman has run the sport for 40 years.

All I know is F1 is going to dissapear now that it will become an american sport.

That's interesting. I wonder how it will affect F1.

Only time will tell, but my gut tells me it wont be good, this will turn F1 into a franchise or nascars or even indycars. As it is they are slowly breaking the core of F1 - innovation. We havent seen anything truly innovative in F1 in the past 2 years. This move will likely make it even less so, especially since F1 in the America's is already not so popular.

Well done the the blitz boks on winning the dubai 7's at least there is still one national teamable to play good rugby. Man did they thrash nz. Can see they have a new coach. And uganda not doing too bad in their first outing.

Also i would love to see Dave Reni be a bok coach he did well with the chiefs and if it can pick up bok rugby again im all for it.

Solitude

To prevent spamming and derailing the Krispy thread. What a weekend for sports, especially local!

We beat the living crap out of everyone in the sevens, with I think only 4 tries against us the whole weekend!
We handily beat Sri Lanka in the first ODI, with a nice return to form for Amla (hope it stays) and with Parnell finally doing some nice bowling. Quintin de Kock's keeping is also just getting better.
Then, probably for the last time, we got to see Federer and Nadal in a Grand Slam final again.

Unfortunately due to the Bachelors this weekend I couldn't watch any of it Live, but I did check the highlights. There is a lot of Cricket ahead, as we are playing New Zealand once this Sri Lanka tour is finished. I'm not really aresed about the Super Rugby at this point in time; just glad for the cricket.

Yeah some great results for South Africa this weekend! i don't watch any sport anymore however. Going for a year of no sport, more gaming and more working towards my goals.

Will continue sport betting however but will base it purely on statistics and will see how it goes. I withdrew all my winnings from last year and will be starting very small this year.

Not to be a devil on your shoulder, but I stream my sports and usually watch it while I'm busy gaming (2 monitors). Cricket doesn't require your fully attention at all; something nice to watch while gaming actually.

I do the same with the rugby, and I only watch the team I support, and not even always.
So you can game and watch sports at the same time :)

Good luck with your endeavour though, I'll tag you here every once in a while 'cause reasons :)

Hehe that's maybe an option. Will think about it. :)

And you are welcome to tag me because I remain a sport fanatic. Just in a different way than before. :)

To answer Blazzoks question. The 2 teams that should be cut from our side are the kings and the bulls. With a religation system coming into play to cycle the lowest team. The bulls are playinig apauling rugby atm and i think its a coaching issue nollis does not have a solid game plan and is to erratic in setting one up cos wvery week the bulls play a different type of rugby. The auzzies will have to cut a team as well and like things are going it should be the reds or the rebels but most likely will be the rebels.

In motogp. Man vinyales is a rocket on that yamaha and if he just keeps his cool like his doing he can win this championship. And if rossi just goes about hes business he can claim his 10th title this year i think its still early but man those 2 look good. Hope marquez fails every race and i think lorenzo is realising he made a mistake going to ducati. At least our 7s are not plummeting downward they are exciting atm.

I had to go far back to find this thread.

Is anyone following the ICC Women's World Cup? We are playing the first semi final against England today. It would be great if we could win the title, show them men cricketers how it's done :D

I see updates about games pop up in my Instagram feed every now and then. Don't really follow the current competition. Really glad to hear they are doing so well. I hope they go to the finals and FINALLY win SA cricket some silverware.

On another point, we need to start researching the Pro12 and which teams and players are there, seeing as the Cheetahs and The Kings will be playing in that European league after being cut from Super Rugby. I'm sad to see them go from the competition, but now we get to watch more rugby over a weekend by following a different competition. So yay!!

So who is up for the Lions taking the SR title this year. I'm rooting for them all the way. and how are the feelings about some of the SA teams among the kings and Cheetahs going to play in overseas leagues?

I'm a Stormers supporter however I don't believe they will make it. If an SA team can take it, it is definitely the Lions. I'll also be rooting for them to take it, I really hope they do.

the Lions have a fantastic chance of winning the SR this year. Thankfully this time around they've ended up top of the log, so if they continue to win their knock-out games, they will have a home final. That is huge! It's probably the reason why they lost last year. The Lions are going to breeze past the Sharks, and probably face the Hurricanes in their semi final. The Crusaders and the Chiefs will battle it out in the other semi, and finally It will be the Crusaders and the Lions in the final at Ellis Park. It will be a sellout crowd and the Lions will play like absolute demons and beat their third New Zealand team in a row, and claim the Super Rugby championship.
