Errr this proves my point ,its an element , we use in physics to give values to unknown , it is used by theoretical physicists the world over , to help bring equations to balance .
If you needed to create a new something say a teleportation Pad
if you had the math working but now needed a hull or shell but it couldnt be made of anything we have know so we would have to design or create or find something new

to get your theory approved , we would substitute the unkown with unobtanium

LOL yes you cant hold it but it is used.

Oh. In that case, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_element and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elements_by_symbol

Dude you take things too seriously , the point I was trying to make is that its not something they pulled out of a hat , or combined to words to create a fictional one for the movie.
It is a real world term and is used in the real world .
You have to have an open mind to accept it ,but if you cant then all it is is a fiction of someones imagination.

My intent was not to debate with all that I wanted to add was that it was not Fiction .

I think the point Avatar was trying to make is that that it's not real in the sense that it doesn't have a physical component. And in the end ... it isn't real - its a concept used to build theories ... and the theories don't become any more valid because Unobtanium is used ... its there to fill in a gap.

It's a bit of a pointless debate really.

Another side to the argument - and also where the tongue-in-cheek reference came from, is that you can call something that you really need but can't find unobtainium as well.

I always wondered how people would cope with interstellar trips that take 5 years.

Pandora Officer: "The Navi are laying seige to our base. We need reinforcements!"
Earth Officer: "Reinforcements enroute. ETA 4 years, 11 months, and 12 days."
Pandora Officer: "Thanks, we will try to hold out until then."

Jake's Wife: "How was your first day at work, honey?"
Jake: "Damn woman, you got old!"

I suppose that's why they were recruiting people that were unattached. I think it got mentioned when they were giving ol' Jake the story about replacing his brother.

But yes, I suppose it would be best not to leave any girl/boyfriends behind. That would be one doomed long-distance relationship.

I don't know.

The movie was visually awesome - but as you can see by Voicy's post (as a joke maybe, but certainly valid) - its all been done. All they did was give it a new set of clothes. I found the entire plot lacking in depth. Definitely worth watching, but not something I'd add to my DVD collection (assuming I had one, of course) :p

I agree with most that the story was not original, but what movie is these days, there are very few movies that have original story lines. I mean the movie industry is over 100 years old, there are only so many stories to tell and different ways to end a movie.

Yes, getting really tired of hearing the 'not original' comments... and then some... I mean really, what movie is truly original these days (like ^he said).

As with anything popular, the outcries and diversity of comments will always be more than it is for a B-grade movie. Everyone wants to get their word out and have got something to say.
So, you can expect pretty much ANYTHING from being mouthed out in large volumes because of its success, and you can expect the most ridiculous kind of comparisons and comments.

I am surprised no one posted anything about the racist accusations that have been made.

The film's writer and director, James Cameron, says the real theme is about respecting others' differences.

Even Avatars are racist? They are BLUE!

It's laughable.

While at the same time I get tired of the whole "greatest movie ever" and movie of the decade comments I've been hearing. Those are just the points I'm making to say it doesn't deserve it. It was just much too predictable. I was sitting in the cinema waiting for things to happen ... and surprise surprise - they did!!

Racist accusations ... hmmm ... I heard of those. And I figure some people go looking for things they can complain about. I would use the word pitiful rather than laughable.

Yeah, I got the whole oppression and slaughter of the natives in the name of advancement angle. I reckon those people need to find a small hut in the mountains and lock themselves up in it. Maybe then nothing will bother them.

Except maybe the weather.

Or the insects ...

Or the lack of movies with racism, violence and everybody's favourite scapegoat - magic - which teaches kids to worship Satan ... apparently :p

Beginning of the movie was great, n looked like a brilliant story line. Sad part they ended the movie really short which sorta made the movie looked like 'Pocahontas'. They should've ended the movie in mysterious ending to develope more of the story line n made something like lord of the rings: trilogy. It is also understandable that they ended the movie just like that after all they used 6 years to make the movie.

There's a reason it ended the way it did - It's not the end...
James Cameron has 2 more movies that are going to come out, he is probably already working on them... I think he is working on both at the same time... their stories and all that are basically done iirc.

I went in expecting a good 3D film experience, since it was my first 3D film, and I was not disappointed in the least.

Story wise, everyone has mentioned it already and I agree.
But, its James Cameroon. So no surprises there.
