ChessConquest - official discussion thread

Ever since the numerous amount of tournament games were initiated at the same time, I've been stuck on 40+ games in progress. And since then I think this is the first time that there isn't a game that I need to make a move for. But I know it'll be a brief time off. Anybody else struggling to keep up?

That gives one a real feeling of satisfaction! Enjoy it. I am playing fewer games now than a few months ago, and so I have that feeling quite regularly. I enjoy the chess so much more.

Yotta, regarding the vacation time, I would like to recommend adding a little bit at the start of every new month. In a few weeks I will surely run out of vacation time, and I'd hate to lose so many games due to being busy with studies/exams. If it increments by, say, 4 days every new month (close to the 40 days/year system as it stands now), with a maximum cap of 30 days, then I feel it is far more considerate. It will allow me to ration how much time I take off, instead of wasting away everything and then being stuck at 0 vacation time for half a year (until the anniversary reset).

The problem is that no matter how you accumulate it, leave will always be finite. It is to be expected that the problems that arise may in some cases be more than leave can account for. For my part I don't think that it makes much difference either way whether the leave gets added on a monthly or an annual basis.

i am happy with a month to month leave system and it would help me too. I forgot my vacation on in December and it ate all my days and i had to struggle the last 8 months. Especially now when i had no Internet for 2 weeks.

Very well spotted. I also just finished a game against herzog, where he chose to play the Fool's mate opening (for black, 1..f6, 2..g5), which is similar to your game. I thought it was an interesting variation: http://www.chessconquest.com/index.php?p=viewgame&gameid=30035 It's an opening to be avoided!

With an opening like that, it is like he is asking to loose with a 2-move fool's mate.

I just finished two awesome games against dickroo. I love those games where me and my opponent are about on the same skill level... those games tend to get intense... and lots of fun :)

At rAge there was this little stand with a guy and a pretty lady telling people about a new chess site here in South Africa. It sounded interesting and so I gave it a try and now I'm hooked.

So, tomorrow it will be a year since Solitude started this thread and we all went running over the ChessConquest.

Yotta, you going to be there again this year?

Whew, it's crazy that it's been a year already. That's a good question ViperGTI. Will you be at rAge this year Yotta? If I remember correctly it actually cost you quite a bit of money to be there and you are running everything for free.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to rAge this year. :(

We weren't at rAge this year. Decided it would be best to showcase ChessConquest again once we have some major updates to show ;)

Hi, I'm new to chessconquest and would like to know if there is a quick way to see which of my games require action? I currently have 4 games going, but need to open each one every time I log on to see if my opponents finished their move.

Hi

Welcome to CQ. When you log in, you will be taken to your list of games currently in progress. The games that require action from you will be marked in Bold while games that you're waiting for the other payer to move will remain in normal text.

Now this is something I'd really like to play: Singularity Chess

Chess960 seems like good fun. It'd be great if it could be built into ChessConquest, as an optional variation to the game. All it'll take is to randomise the starting position, with only a few restriction. Shouldn't be too difficult to code.

Yotta, I believe there's an error with the way that the site handles a stalemate. I saw that you managed to get a draw out of a game with chinchin (well done with that by the way, he's a very strong opponent), but if you look at the tournament scores it shows that chinchin has 0, and you have 1, instead of 0.5 each. And on chinchin's profile, it shows the following: Draws with White: 1, Draws with Black: 2, [Total] Games Drawn: 2. So there's clearly an error in the way that a stalemate is being handled by the site, because other types of draws (agreement, threefold repetition, invalid checkmate pieces) do not give this discrepancy.

Most of the code is already compatible to implement Chess960, except for special rules such as castling. But you're right, I won't be too difficult.

Yes, there is an error, and I'm aware of it. When we pull over all the games from the current database to the new database we will re-calculate all ratings to take into account the rating calculation mistake with regards to stalemate draws.

(I will look into fixing the error in the current version).

Is there any blitz/bullet modes?

Hi Lyt... welcome to the CQ forum ;)

ChessConquest offers turn based games (games aren't completed in one sitting). We did a market survey a while ago that indicated most players preferred this form of game-play.

Since we do however get the occasional request for blitz mode, it is still on our development task list. This feature will however only be available sometime in the future (won't be able to give an accurate ETA at this point).
