Eve Online goes free to play after 13 years

As a long time and still active player I believe this change will make the game a lot easier for people to start as well easier to return to the game.

With the limits placed on a free character you can get involved in a lot of the fun stuff in Eve, including PVP so it is not very restrictive at all.

Looking forward to having more people in game!

I really want to play it but it just looks like one of those games that require way too much time.

As a big EVE fan I'm very happy with this change. The player numbers have been going down, and this might just inject a lot of new players into the game.

You can start a trial account now and start playing in the meantime. By the time your trial has expired the game will be free to play and your account will automatically convert.

How many South Africans are playing this still?

Started a new char and thinking of subscribing is it still worth it? Any South African corps still?

Well I'm part of a SA corp, and I would say we are the biggest corp of SA players in EVE, we are about 150, but there is a lot of alts as can be expected. We were once mainly a PvP corp, but now we have so many Indy guys we cater for everyone now. You can join our ingame channel WCS-Pub you can also check our website https://eve.theninjabag.net/join/

We live in Delve, and we are part of the Imperium/CFC

Lots of South Africans play it, all the time. If you are making a new char, consider joining Faction Warfare for some real fun. It is light on the in game pocket, lots of people want to teach you.

Also if you are playing for free, you can still have a big impact and enjoy really fun PVP in faction warfare space with the skills you are allowed to have as an Alpha clone.

Thanks for the responses guys, I already subbed exploration was easy to get into and whole space is profitable enough but that's is only to subsidize my pvp aspirations unfortunately I rolled an Ammar Char because lasers looked pretty. Did'nt take me to long to realize that they aren't quite suited for pvp doing only thermal and em dmg but I invested to much into him to go back now haha.

I hear Ammar faction warfare is kinda dead? Is it possible for me to join another faction and still participate?
I have no idea how faction warfare works.

Yes you can join any factional warfare side you like. Just because you fly Amarr ships does not mean you have to fight for them in Factional Warfare. The more active regions for Factional Warfare would be Gallente/Caldari, but you can join either of them.

If you have a subbed account, you do not have to worry about only having Amarr ships at the moment, you will cross train, plus the Confessor is not a bad ship, and is decent for PvP.

ye I am also sucked in making decent Isk with Exploration over the course of the following two weeks I will try out the factional warfare.

Hi everyone.. Just installed Eve Online.. making my way slowly through the tutorial.. Learning the ropes so to say.. watching some videos on youtube.. Would just like to know if anyone here would like to help out a newbie. A friend and I are looking at joining up so there will be 2 of us trying to learn and some help will be greatly appreciated. Even a couple of websites / guides to have a look at to help. I seem to have found a youtuber by the name of sprintonwater who seems to have some tips with getting your HUD customized.. Thanks in advanced guys.

I also started playing after a long siesta on a new char.
try http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Main_Page I have yet to search for an answer that I did not get from there they also have a bunch of videos scattered around youtube.
I personally went the null sec exploration route to generating my ISK making good money around 40 mil a night which for me is a very nice income seeing as I am only 3 weeks old but it is very risky. But other than that choose what you won't find boring the beauty of EvE is you can do whatever you want.

Good Luck out there. There is allot to learn but that is kinda what makes it fun, well for me at least.

Contact R'onin in game if you need to chat and need help. If I am on, I will help for sure!

First thing: I can REALLY recommend a training institution like eve university

http://www.eveuniversity.org/

Not only do they have out of game pages and pages of info, they also have recorded audio classes and, once you are in game with them, real live classes where you learn by following example in game.

They will also set you up in a wide range of member corporations once you know what you want to do.

First thing you need to decide is what do you want to do in Eve and then work towards that. Let's list some of the broad categories of Eve then I will advise on some of the good routes to get there:

1. Mining

The easiest way to make in game money (ISK) at the start of the game. You need very little in the way of skills (game terms not real skill) to make a success of this. It is also, however, the least exciting venture in Eve. Your miner stares at rocks and fires off lasers at those rocks, collects the rocks and turns the rock into minerals and then sells them.

Find a highsec corporation that specialises in mining, they will help you a lot.

2. Industry

Industry is a natural extension of mining as you use the minerals you mine/refine and turn it into ships and ship modules which you then sell for ISK. If you are into that kind of thing it really is rewarding and can build up to you making your own space cities/refineries etc. Most industrial corps can help you with this too.

3. PVE

PVE in eve has quite a few options available:

1. Missions: static missions that allow you to make ISK and shoot AI bad guys
2. Incursions: high end static shooting of AI bad guys with a group of people
3. Ratting: where you shoot AI bad guys by the ton and collect bounties for them

PVE can be exciting, you shoot things, they shoot back, you make ISK.

4. PVP

There are so many options for PVP in eve, some allow you to make ISK and most allow you to lose ISK ;-)

The best place to learn PVP and be able to make some ISK is faction warfare. The reason is that most faction warfare happens with small and cheap ships PLUS there are some very helpful corporations and alliances that will take you in and train/equip you. They do this for 2 reasons: firstly they are hoping you stay and become another soldier on the front lines and secondly, most of those people have gone through the same learning experience and want to make it easier on others.

5. Exploration

This is the oddest one out of all the options. It takes a lot of patience, some skills (game terms) and real skill but can be very rewarding, especially if you enjoy travelling a LONG way out of your comfort zone and finding new (for you) stuff/places. It can also be very dangerous.

Oh yeah, some golden rules in eve:

1. In order to work towards being safe wherever you are in Eve: act as if you are not safe anywhere in Eve
2. Never fly something you cannot afford to lose.
3. Never fully trust anyone, unless you know them in real life and know where they live.
4. NEVER take ANY setback in Eve personally.
