Finally set up Netflix

Warning! Long post incoming! If you suffer from ADD, take cover immediately! There's no TL;DR at the end!

I've had Netflix and Hulu+ on my PC, tablet and a WD Live media streamer.

A few tips:
1. Set the DNS settings on your router to the unotelly primary and secondary DNS. This means that any device running through the router will be seen as US or UK or whatever country you want to live in that evening.
2. If your IP change (sometimes when the router resets) you need to update IP on the unotelly website. Bookmark that page.
3. Go through the motions to get your tablet or even smartphone setup with Netflix as well. I can stream to two devices on a 4mb/s line with decent results. It's nice to soak in the tub while watching Arrested Development.
4. Check out the Netflix original series as well. They are pretty good.
5. Hulu+ is more difficult to set up than Netflix. Netflix will accept your Saffa Credit Card, Hulu+ won't so you need a voucher.

Why I cancelled Hulu+
a. Can't pay with CC (see point 5 above).
b. They have ads.
c. They usually only carry the last three or four episodes of a season (but they are available within a day or two after airing).

So, what hardware should I use?

I heard Roku is great. Not the best option for a media player (playing your MKV files from an external hdd) but unmatched for media streaming.
BUT READ UP ON INSTALLING THE ROKU IN SOUTH AFRICA IF YOU DECIDE TO GET ONE. If you don't have unotelly already set up you could have trouble, I heard.

Personally I use this: WD TV Live but I think this one will also do Netflix WD Play.

On your media streamer you get "channels". Hulu is one. Netflix another. There are a lot of channels available. For instance movie rental sites where you pay per movie (much like DSTV Boxoffice but with a much bigger and newer selection). There are also channels that let you watch free content (old movies and series).
The Roku devices especially have a shitload available.

These streamers are also DLNA compatible plus you get remote controls for your smartphone or tablet.

So, how does all this come together?

You access Netflix through your device using either the physical remote or your smartphone to play, pause select etc.
Now your SO walks in and you want to show him/her a video you shot on your phone. You select the video on your phone and "play to" the streamer. The video plays on the TV. Granny drops by and wants to watch the latest Skrillex vid on youtube. You launch the youtube channel, search and play it. Tonight, you want to watch a movie you legally downloaded to your NAS or PC, so you browse to via your streamer and "play from" the NAS/PC.
Saturday, you are working in the garden and your kid wants to watch a movie from the NAS. You pull out your phone and selected the movie to "play from" the NAS and "play to" the streamer without you having to get up.

You can do all this in other ways with other set ups as well, (a lot of the features are thanks to DLNA and not device specific) but this is the way I like it.

It's actually pretty easy. I mean, even matt managed it "whistling:

Most of these things work out of the box. Start with the free evaluation periods for everything to see if it is what you want.

1. Get Unotelly working.
2. Sign up for Netflix.
3. Watch it from your PC using their websites to see if you like it and if it streams ok to your taste.
4. Do the same for Hulu and any other services you want to use.
5. Spend a day or two using the services to get a feel for it and to decide what you want to keep and what you want to drop.

After all this, you can decide on a device to connect to your TV. There are many, many options and if your TV is DLNA enabled and it can connect to the network (doesn't have to be a Smart TV), you could set it up in way to not even need your xbox or another device.

Har har

But ya, it's pretty easy, it's just a bit of admin coming up with fake accounts, especially if you need US accounts for the consoles as well to download the apps.

If you have an android phone or tablet, get the Netflix apk from XDA-developers as well. It works really well streaming to a tablet and like I said, a 4mb line handles two streams well enough. Just remember to only stream at home through your unotelly enabled router.

Awesome! I might be getting an Android tab today if I'm lucky. I'll grab that app

Ok well wish me luck im going to try set it all up now and i found my 3 months xbL memebership meneer 44 how do i set up the tv to stream directly though ?

Ok, got it working through the web. Now I want the Windows 8/8.1 app, but can't find it in the Windows Store. Even clicking the link from the web just opens the Windows Store on the landing page... So I guess region locking is at play again. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Got it sorted. Just changed my Windows region to US and it worked.

Why is netflix trying to charge me even though the first month is mean to be free ?

I got a call from my bank that Netflix had put through a test transaction, so maybe it's just trying the card out and it'll reserve the funds until later or reverse the transaction or something.

Then the bank called about a transaction from Hulu for R11.22, which is probably a $1 test transaction as well

Speaking of Hulu, I set up Hulu Plus as well. Works great on the PS3, and I downloaded the Hulu Plus app on the XBox as well, but if I run it, it says that it's not available in my region, so it's either checking the region setting on my console or on my xbox live account in addition to what the Unotelly does.

How did you even dl the Hulu app? Did you do anything special, or just use the same DNS?

There may be other ways, but the way I know of is using PlayOn (I thought there was a free version, but it appears not, sorry).

First, make sure your TV is DLNA compatible and connected on the network. If you have Media Player setup correctly on your PC, you'll be able to play video files on your TV directly from your PC. This is a good way to test that everything is working correctly. It is also a great way to impress visitors that are not extremely technical. If your TV isn't DLNA compatible, don't worry: your XBox is. You should be able to play files from your PC to your XBox, displaying on your TV.

Once everything is connected, install PlayOn on your PC and Xbox. The full instructions are on their site.
http://www.playon.tv
You will basically stream stuff from the web to your XBox which will display it on your TV.

I would recommend that you rather get an Apple TV or WD Live or Roku or some other streaming media player. It costs a few bucks, but it is worth it in the end.

Edit: Oh, and I'm pretty sure My Little Pony is available on Netflix.

I got a call from my bank that Netflix had put through a test transaction, so maybe it's just trying the card out and it'll reserve the funds until later or reverse the transaction or something.

That is correct. Netflix does a test transaction of $1 to make sure the CC is valid. They reverse it when they are happy everything is kosher.
