How to game when Eskom cuts the power

Bleh, I have a UPS and its primary function is to safely shut down my system after 15min of running on batteries.
 
I would rather just get me a UPS instead of a generator; they cost too much to maintain and make a hell of a noise.

Have you heard a bunch of UPS's when the power goes out? Bloody annoying.

So it's either noise and gaming, or no noise (find a laptop and watch a movie) and/or playing board games.
 
just never ever skimp on a UPS, you get some really shit ones. Generally you can identify them by the term "Back up", "offline" and "Standby", always look for "Online", "Line interactive" or "Double Conversion"
 
I have a 1200W inverter hooked to 2x 100Ah deep cycle batteries.
Keeps a +/- 600W setup going for +/- 3 hours. I could probably squeeze an extra hour if I use headphones instead of hifi and turn off other non-essentials. Got the thing from maidenelectronics.co.za, cost me 6K.

The only annoyance is distance to the modem - running the extension cord from the UPS at the moment. Tried with a separate cheap 650VA UPS with 7Ah battery, but it only runs for +/- 25 min. Must be the inefficiency of the inverter... If I take the battery out and plug the modem directly to the battery terminals, it should theoretically run a few hours. But that has a high inconvenience factor... Has anyone else solved that problem cheaply?
 
We use a generator, gaming is too important yo miss out on due to eskom incompetence. Currently use a laptop with the generator thought as I am worried about the desktop and clean power.

Anyone that can recommend a good ups , that is easy to setup. Needs to power a highend pc and vdsl router.
 
I'd go with an APC Smart-UPS, just adjust the size to your run time needs. the 1500VA is a good all round fit and will come with PowerChute Personal edition and a USB connection. That will be sufficient to safely shut down your PC before the UPS battery runs out.

I have a small Inverter Generator combined with a UPS. UPS only lasts for about 6 minutes and is only to prevent me losing work (or game progress). (http://www.ryobi.co.za/product/generators/rg-1000i)
When the power goes out, I start up the generator, connect a lead and connect the UPS plus a light to the extension. So it basically gives a stable power output that is enough to power a light, my pc and dstv / home theatre / tv.
I had other generators before but a lot of times the power output wasn't stable so it wasn't charging the UPS and didn't want to put my PC directly on unstable power.

In the specs, it does say that it is super quiet. Up to 40% quieter than standard generators... It's not.

my understanding and this might be wrong. they generate voltage from radiation and not light from the sun. so clouds are not really a problem. and if you using them you should have enough batteries.
