Hypocrisy in the Gaming World

Hehehe, I'm actually busy writing an article on the topic. The context of the discussion on MyBB hasn't really lent itself to a broader analysis of the subject, which I think actually makes for very interesting and thought provoking discussion.

I look forward to reading it :3

/fly kicks Ly-Ly down the hill.

Good article -thumbs up- Wondered when u would write something that would make my eyes bleed :p ;)

Fank yoooou :3 I actually wanted to write more but I thought that people would see epic wall of text and stop reading :x

I saw the Thread on MyBB and i have to agree with Azimuth. People who chip consoles for the express purpose of playing pirated software are filth.

Nice post Lycan.

Thank you :3 I agree with Azimuth too.

I do not have stats, and I am curious about this. How many people that pirate products actually ever go out and buy the original if they found they loved said product?

I actually think that abusers of these kinds of freedoms will always exist. I don't really feel as though we're in a minority though... More that we're just grouped with "them" and the misconceptions associated therewith. But who knows...

I also believe that people who pirate without the intention of ever buying a game, will never buy it. Which is why I still view it as money that isn't taken from publishers/developers, whereas if the same person buys a R120 counterfeit/pirated copy from the local pawn shop, it's a whole other issue. It's why I believe it's very difficult to turn it into a black-and-white issue when it is, in fact, very grey.

But yeah, nice read!

Fanks :3

I have a similar feeling about this. but all the old games I have that are copied, i'm not gonna go out and buy them again for a few reasons. One being that i simply can't find them and the other I can't afford them all. There are a hand full of recent that i could have baught, but didn't, and i do regret that. but it's too late now. but i'm trying to make up for it by supporting the companies i like, and screwing the ones i hate as much as possible.

My Windows 7 purchase will be my first legit copy too. Only reason being that until recently paying the kind of prices demanded for an OS was simply way outside my range.

But mostly I agree with Lycan. Temporarily copying the games and playing them gives you a much more informed approach to buying games in store. If you play a game, finish it and delete it without buying - then to my mind the developers didn't do their job properly - the game had no replay value. I've done this a couple of times.

I have what, three years ago, would have been for me an impossibility - a quite extensive games library - all legal. I get a lot of joy out of owning a legal copy of the game I'm enjoying. It's a hobby (and similar to my manga and anime collections) and while expensive, I don't mind shelling out for it.

There is only one fly in the ointment though. Especially recently, an increasingly large percentage of the games I've copied have been infected with one or more viruses - usually trojans. Makes copying and testing a risky business - so these days I tend to rely more and more on friends and acquaintances who already have the game and either play it on their PCs or borrow the disks from them.

I'm planning on making my first legit OS purchase with Win 7. I will gladly spend the money after using the RC

I'm with Tincan on this one ...

Long gone are the days when we were kids who couldn't afford software.

I am not justifying my piracy days, but I take pride in purchasing every game I play now. The only time I'll pirate a game is if I have the original on Xbox. Which to me is the same as making MP3's of your original CD's ... same product - different platform.

I'll try find the Piracy thread where we discussed this very same topic.

Raven Gold - speaking of copywrites etc.

Edgar Allen Poe's - The Raven is still my favourite poem of all time.

Your sig would've been even more awesome if it had the original text "Quoth the Raven "Nevermore..." in the same gothic font.

i bought vista and it was painful, i will however happily buy windows 7 for the other pc's i can't use my msdn licensing for.

as for gaming, when i was in school i pirated everything to death. it was a great achievement for me to get it and finish it before it was retail.

after school i started to buy them when i could afford, but nowadays i make it a point to buy the game if it is at all possible to do so. however some titles if there are no demo its pirate first and then buy if ok. besides the days where you can just run blindly and buy titles are far over as each title now has to be tired and tested and not just buy because it will be great.

this is where as the console is great in the sense if i can borrow my friend's legal copy play and if i dig it go and get it.

i've only once truly reverted to piracy a week back where as i have done everything humanly possible to get halo1, but just couldn't get my xbox live's download to give me a working version. nonetheless at the start of next month i will retry the download :)

If anything, the type of piracy you support should be encouraged. It may very well result in developers getting their ass into gear and creating games people actually want to pay for instead of ripping off the unsuspecting.

I, too, buy when I feel is worth my money and delete the rest. Think of it as extended demo's :D It's very satisfying looking at your collection of legal games and thinking "my precious.'"

If it wasnt for pirating I wouldnt be who i am!
I never had the original War craft and Counter strike etc... But I loved the games and I want to compete so, got originals!

Indeed. I've run out of shelf-space. I'm in a bit of pinch at the moment. Pretty soon I'll have to give up my bed and start sleeping on the floor :D

Windows 7 is really good you should use it nothing like that shity vista. Games run very well on it.

Just so you know you can/could get games from the library. It didn't cost anything except your yearly R30 library card. get the game for 3 weeks and then return it. That's how i played Giants: Citizen Kabuto for the first time and The Sims.

Don't know about it now... was 10 years ago.

I think MOST of us who grew up around gaming and LAN's who have matured into this "hobby" have a natural appreciation for game developers and the effort that goes into making great games. We were all naive in our youth and honestly didn't know any better. When you went to a LAN and your mates were playing Soldier of Fortune, you copied it and jumped in on the action. Sure looking back you may think it was reckless or dodgy, but at the end of the day, for me at least, it has made me greatly appreciate the gaming industry and in turn support the developers by PURCHASING the game's we now play today.

Honestly, when you turn around all see your game collection of boxes that I know all you guys display proudly, it's a gooood feeling. amirite? :D

PS: I hope this doesn't make me sound old :(

I have a few thoughts on piracy. The thing I hate are people that feel that they are entitled to playing games. They are the ones that say that Rxxx is far too much, so they will pirate instead. They don't seem to care that people would hard work into that game, and they are stealing IP.

Then we have the 'try before I buy' type, who claims to only pay if he thinks that the game is good enough. :(

When it comes to lans, I always wished that more PC games had a way to allow multiple people to play from one disk. My friends would do the 'pass the disk' thing so that we could all play a game that one of us owned. We just agreed not to play except at lans. I think that it would be a nice way to get people involved in playing certain games, while not being completely illegal.

I was about to ask how it is that the book publishing industry doesn't seem to have a problem with the idea of libraries, whereas similar services for computer-software based entertainment appear to be few and far between.

Azimuth?

Well, it's not at all unusual for video shops to rent out games, while some places like BT Games have rental schemes too. Visibility locally might seem a little limited, but it's big business in the UK and US.

Of course, these are almost always restricted to console titles - start renting out PC games, and you're pretty much supporting piracy.

This is the part I don't understand yet. :o

Why is a borrowing library for books not considered illegal while one for PC games is?
