I pledged... (✯) Citizen. Enlist now!

When full release happens yeah, beta alpha no.but dude even if you loose it they a claimed you dont have to grind to get new one.also in game insurance will be available.

Not sure I entirely understand. Thing is I don't want to pay R500 for a ship which gets pwned by a guy with a R2000 ship, then have to buy another R500 ship.

But you have to fork out more money for this insurance? or use ingame earned credits?

During the alpha and beta testing you cant loose your R500 ship.on full release you can play the game doing easy missions. Then buy your ship insurance using money earned ingame. Then go take on other players.

Hope the game is going to be cool, loved Wing Commander. I'm going to wait for the full game before spending any money though.

You start off with a certain amount of insurance time when you start playing the game. This amount depends on what package you bought, for instance if you pledged early (before November 2012 I think) you will have free lifetime insurance on the specific ship you bought. They did this as an incentive / reward for early backers. If you eventually buy another ship it will have its own insurance policy. I myself pledged in May last year and have 4 months free ship insurance.

Once your starting insurance runs out, you buy further insurance with in-game galactic credits. It's not necessary to spend more money on the game.

This games financing model is hilarious, and so effective.

Game: "Hey, pay $x for the base game, with a shitty ship! Or pay $xxx for the base game with a not so shitty ship!"
Gamers: "Nah, $xxx is WAY too much money, I'll go with $x."
Game: "Oh great, thanks for buying the game!"

A few days later:
Game: "Oh, by the way, since you bought our game, you get to participate in a special, one-time offer. You can UPGRADE the ship you got with the base game, if you pay $y. It's cheap!"
Gamer: "Oh wow, that's really not much money, what the hell, let me upgrade."
Game: "Great, they paid $y, which brings their total spend to $xxx anyway. Winning!"

Rinse. Repeat.

It's like the Verimark version of game pricing. And the best thing about this - effectively micro-transaction - model? They receive all the (DLC) capital up-front, and get to use that to make their DLC. Not only that, but they'll likely be able to charge more for DLC over time, because it's not like releasing a big chunk of content and having to charge a lowish price for it. Each piece they release has a relative low price, but cumulatively, it'll cost gamers more. Also, instead of having gamers use in-game funds to buy these ships (which doesn't really directly financially benefit them), they receive cold, hard cash.

Genius.

they've raised more than $38mil! there should be no need to make the ships so expensive

You will be able to buy any of the ships in game with in game currency. So don't back more than you feel comfortable with at the moment. The only difference is that if you buy them now you might get LTI (life time insurance) for free.

I forgot about that. Another nice hook. Also, very similar to how insurance companies grab you in real life ;)

They are in deed since once the game is released you will be able to buy all the ships with in game money.(this can change anytime)

Is Star Citizen “free to play”? A subscription game?
To play Star Citizen you need only to buy the initial game. There will never be a monthly charge for usage. Some in-game items may be available as microtransactions, but we will NEVER sell anything that can’t be acquired through honest (and fun!) gameplay.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the funding model. As I said, I think it's completely brilliant. Whoever came up with it is a genius.

I'll just get the game when it's released, and buy upgrades with ingame money :p

LTI was over in November 2013.

There was a whole discussion on how people afford the more expensive one and all of them mostly said the same thing they have a gaming budged and they saved that each month to finally buy the more expensive stuff so in essence gamers know how to spend money on games :D

Why not back them now and get some extra goodies a long the way? $30 is fair price for the started package, then later if you want a better ship you exchange that package for the money and just buy an upgraded package.
