Is there anything really wrong with using a tv as a monitor?

InSanity

Just wants the trophy
Ok so i really need a new monitor but TV's now a days are jsut so much cheaper i mean i used to at one stage use my sinotech 42"as a tv monitor now i dont want anything that big but what is the real value add of a monitor versus a TV ?

Something you have to look at is what size is the room your pc is in and what size TV are you going for, TV response is slower than pc screen.

I have an all in one screen it's a 23" tv/lcd combo Full HD 1080p res 1920 x 1080 with everything you need 5ms response and built in sound paid like 1299 for it, and it works amazingly well

Good question Insanity. Maybe something to do with monitor's having VGA and TV's don't? But then you can use HDMI I suppose but is it as good?

I view monitors as being more clear and crisp than a tv because they are made for close up viewing, but that's probably unfounded.

I mostly use a TV (Sony Bravia 40") for gaming on my PC, but that's mainly because I have a tiny (15") monitor for my PC. My TV cabinet, where my consoles are, is right next to my PC so it works rather nicely for games, especially ones that I can play with a controller.

I agree monitors do look better but i jsut dotn think they look that much better for the price difference

The only concern when using your TV for computer use will be the resolution. Nowadays most monitor are capable of resolutions at 1080p and beyond, giving sharper images. But if you have a full HD TV capable of displaying at 1080p, you shouldn't have an issue with connecting a PC to it, seeing as all Full HD TV's also comes with HDMI inputs.

i'm using a Samsung 32" TV.
I've connected my pc and PS3 to it using HDMI -- i must say i don't think i would be able to go back to a normal monitor easily :)

What is the name, model of this tv??

I used a 32" Sammie for a few months when my old monitor died. It wasn't a terrible experience.

Only real criticism was the ghosting--not a big issue in most games but sometimes it can really screw with your eyes.

Can you do normal stuff like browse internet and it's clear?

It's usually clear enough if you add a little more distance between you and the tv, going to big >32inch the pixels start getting really big but the only time I've noticed it not being clear is when you not using 1 to 1 pixel mapping. I'm not sure about other brands but samsung has a pc mode for this which makes a big difference, without it text appears blurry.

ghosting ?

Ghosting :)

Less noticeable on modern TVs but if you're playing something with a lot of on-screen movement it can be very noticeable and eye-upsetting :p

I've got my pc connected to my 40" Bravia lcd via HDMI and to me its heaven on earth! I've seen the likes of a 4k screen at my friends place and its looks fckun amazing to say the least BUUUUT the thing is I'm very much happy gaming at 1080p cos i'm not a full blown avid gamer that wants all the bells and whistles in gaming... So that's why i'm settling with a gpu that can give me a phenominal experience at 1080p cos i'm not really looking for much more really and a R9 270X will serve my purpose very well!

+-60FPS average on the most demanding games with all the bells and whistles is good enough for me plus with the less demanding games the FPS rates rises substantially, all dependent on what you play...

So to me its all user preference really...

Everybody deep down wants the Ferrari but are just as happy driving your average Corrolla:p

*Edit*: I sit about +- 4 meters away from the screen using cordless mouse and keyboard to do the every day mundane pc stuff and wireless Microsoft Xbox controller for the gaming side cos i was a console guy 1st and getting used to keyboard and mouse gaming takes a bit of time...

I find it very hard to focus on the screen and after a few minutes my eyes become very sore...

I would not recommend it, maybe if you were some gunnar...

I think this got mostly to do with the distance you sitting away from the screen... Bigger screen, more distance...
