Karma system incoming!

Don't know where the assumption of moderation came from.

I'll chalk that to a lack of proper communication and following the thing properly through it's development, on my part.
At the very least, not your fault.

I remember a discussion about moderation of Karma, but I see it never really went anywhere.

Shadow's suggestion of badges, or achievements, or whatever name one tacks on it... That works if you wanna tie some knots in the community. Tongue-in-cheek one's can still be misunderstood by members, and could again cause separation etc.
But an achievement-based system can definitely work.

Especially if you could somehow tie some of the better achievements to a monthly "reward"?
Free T-shirt? Coffee mug? 2GB Web-Africa prepaid topup?
Useful, yet arbitrary little rewards... I'm sure some of the sponsors wouldn't mind splashing small prizes into it for a little exposure...

I thoroughly expect a monthly achievement for "Most Epic Beard" btw...
I should start an Epic Beard Thread.
Right now...

I'll look into some sort of achievements, I think there may be a standard feature in vB that can facilitate this. As I've mentioned before, we do not use 3rd-party vB plugins because those tend to break everything when there's an update - not worth the risk.

As for the karma system; I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it as a form of interacting with one another. The core purpose of the forum is for discussions through posting. If the karma system is somehow negatively influencing the way people post, then maybe it should just be turned off for the time being.

I've seen reputation systems like this cause big problems on other forums; sometimes keeping things simple is the best course of action.

It's bad enough that post count becomes some sort of pecking order measuring tool, and now it seems karma has been thrown in to the mix.

Well, you can remove that from the standard forum view as well. As far as I know, NAG doesn't display theirs in forum posts. There's still going to be a pecking order that gets established between certain members, but at least it won't be supplemented by e-penisry. :p

Yeah .... but just deleting the TK thread works as a quick fix for that :D

Quick - do it again!!!

It demotes conversation to a watery level of "I agree, because if I don't, eventually my posts won't even show up anymore!"
I'm not sure where you get that impression from, as far as I know your rep doesn't affect your ability to post at all. If your rep is bad enough I guess that would cause the mods to take a look at your account as a candidate for banning since you should only get that low by obvious trolling and bad forum behaviour.

You also can't take every neg rep as an affront to your personality, this is the internet, people do mean things on the internet. That shouldn't stop you from expressing your opinion as long as it's done in a respectful manner.

Most of you complaining about getting neg rep are still in the green, I see only trolls in the red?

I think the main complaint is centered around the fact that the current Karma system is causing unnecessary animosity between members. I did say this a while ago:

The flaw in the system is that it pre-supposes that everyone taking part are adults ... mentally or physically - take your pick. I've seen the karma system used to great effect on some professional forums - again, the fact that most of the participants were professionals probably had something to do with it.

Some people got neg-repped and decided to take it personally - hence the couple of squabbles that have taken place in this thread already.

but once you and your friends' personal info start getting posted on public sites, and you start receiving random emails threatening you and your family with physical violence, it gets a bit hard to simply sit back and ignore it when one of the people I suspect to be the culprit keeps trying to paint himself as the victim and me as the troll.

These are serious offenses Graal. I am sending you a PM regarding this.

I haven't been on this forum for few months because of it. :/

Just to be the devil's advocate, since I like arguing(probably reason for negative rep in the past), or making bland points that really are for ideal conditions. Point: A whole group of people can just decide to pick on a person for no reason, and handout negative rep to that person.

You also can't take every neg rep as an affront to your personality, this is the internet, people do mean things on the internet. That shouldn't stop you from expressing your opinion as long as it's done in a respectful manner.
As you said, it shouldn't. But I am sure there are cases where negative rep has been handed out unfairly/system's use misunderstood/system used wrongly/personal grudges, and I'm not talking about any of the stuff/arguments currently in this thread. Some people are more prone to heed others opinions of them(this can't be denied, as its heard of all over the media often enough) and simply might not voice their argument/opinion or stop being active.

Onto a road closer to the topic,

I'll look into some sort of achievements, I think there may be a standard feature in vB that can facilitate this. As I've mentioned before, we do not use 3rd-party vB plugins because those tend to break everything when there's an update - not worth the risk.

I would have loved to give a link to a forum that made use of an automatic rep system, by setting and checking milestones. Unfortunately, there was some sort of vbulletin plugin for linking to a social site that had a security flaw, even the patch didn't fix it, so they got hacked twice and now using mybb... So no more example..

But here's some details I remember: It had Awards, and Achievements tabs, was point based, and points were given for posts/threads and some other stuffs. It had a thanks button under each post, so you could thank and this gave some points. The awards were 'mysterious', such that it didn't say what you needed to do to get the award, and the award could only belong to one person at a time.

Some other things: Referrals got you an award/achievement after a certain number reached. Number of friends. Number of thanks. Time registered, up to 1 year(thereafter its pretty pointless). If I remember any more, I will put it here. Can't say if it was 3rd party or a built in vb function. Does this site use vb? If so, why isn't the copyright at the bottom? But yes, now you mention it, it is vb, since it looks and works like vb.

We aren't NAG :)

There are still guys reeling from shock about that you know !

I must check on that; I think the forum has been migrated to new servers and we can reactivate that thread.

Exactly why we don't use 3rd-party plugins.

Doesn't sound like a standard vB function. There are possibly some things I can look into.

We aren't required to have a vB copyright displayed at the bottom. We pay vB good money for using their forum software. Copyright is implied regardless, so on this forum, the copyright on content belongs to MyGaming and its respective posters.

So; to test turning off the reputation system and waiting to see if everyone starts farting daisies?

Yes sir, Mr James. Just that I'd like to add a little something to the above said, "Powered by vBulletin" is what I was trying to get at. I dont really mind about the display or not of copyright. Now I know why I like the layout, cos I'm used to it. xD.

But yes, would be nice if you looked into 'things' or if you wait till after saturday, I could try find out or look into system myself, but atm my hands are tied down.

Back to studies. :/

Oh, my opinion on current rep system: Can be gathered by my previous post stating about using an automatic system. So: current system is flawed, change/remove/replace it.
Reason: Its flawed because of its users. No-one is perfect. Sorry to break the news to you if no one has told you:eek:
Here is to a better, and positive future for the mygaming community.xD

Because mybb seems to be an acronym for mybroadband, I'm informing you ppl that I was actually saying myBB. No, not mybroadband, LOL. Its an alternative to vBulletin, free and open source. Others are punBB, openBB etc. Sorry if I caused confusion.

There'll probably be a couple of comments when it happens, but I figure people will get used to its absence soon enough.

Do what you think is best :) We'll have to go back to the old method of reporting nasty people to the mods again :p

It's difficult to decide what to do when there are only a few vocal members on the issue. Perhaps a poll is in order.
