Nintendo Switch

Knowing you, personally, I know that you would love it. I am sure that even a neutral party like Wyvern can attest to this.

Yeah she's totally gonna play 1-2 Switch with me, and we're gonna make a party out of it, and probably a drinking game.

But you know me so well. The Switch just ticks all the boxes I wanted out of the next Nintendo console.

Haha everyone just treat me like normal. Nothing's changed. :) I would have said that stuff even if I wasn't a mod.

I know you would've. You don't have that tag under your name for nothing you know

So, outside of Breath of the Wild, which is obviously THE game to get for the Switch, which ones are good recommendations? Also, what are you guys looking forward to getting?

I had a look, and I haven't played Mario cart in about 20 years, so I'm really amped for that. Also, Yooka-Laylee looks SO awesome

I love the appeal of 1-2-Switch but I fear it being a game where you show off or play while around people, but once you've played it once or twice with those people, you'll need new people to play it with.

Like I said, this is my first Nintendo since the NES days, so I have never played things like Splatoon, Super Smash Bro's and MarioKart. So to me I'm really looking to get games like this, especially Mario Kart and or Mario World.

I am also wanting to get Binding of Isaac, Shovel Knight, Snipper Clips and Snake Pass (this looks really cool).

If you havent played shovel kinght, highly recommend that, same for Binding of Isaac. I am waiting for Mario kart now. absolutely loved that game on the 3ds and was always sad i missed the wii u version. Then also last chance heroes looks pretty great and of course we will get the new xenoblade soon and the rumours are strongly pointing at a full console main pokemon game.

See I think its a good idea for Hammer who is traveling a lot to get some gaming in, I know you neeeeeeeeeeeed it.

... is there any other MyGamers that has bought the console yet? What do you think about it?

... I can't really recommend the platform to just anyone as the price is a bit steep.

If it weren't for the fact that it is sold out, I would've bought one while I was in the US. After messing around with the Switch at the ZA launch, I was convinced.

The only thing that is still a concern is how Nintendo is handling its user profile and digital storefront system this time. I got burned with the Wii U and don't want to fall into the same trap.

(Essentially Nintendo locked user accounts to the Wii U that you created the account on. My first Wii U broke within the first week or so, got it replaced under warranty, but I lost access to my user account. Nintendo SA agreed to refund my purchases, but I was disappointed that I couldn't use my regular handle. I was later told that Nintendo Europe can transfer user accounts as part of its warranty process, but that ability was not granted to Core / Nintendo SA.)

I did however take the Switch along to a social gathering braai the other night...

That is a very cool story. It confirms the impression I got about the console from the hands-on time I got with it.

UPDATE:

I've been searching high and low, but finding the combination of stock I want is super difficult. There are a limited amount of stock of the consoles available in EB Games and JB Hifi, but dammit, no-one has any stock of The Legend of Zelda! Like I cannot find a single physical copy of the game anywhere. I really don't want to buy it digitally just if there is any account issues as Jan said.

I found the perfect combination at a store called Big W, where a Switch, 1-2 Switch and BotW all are $570, which is an awesome deal. But the only time when they'll have stock again is in 30 DAYS FROM NOW!!! Like wow, I know it's all selling really well, but dammit this is insane.

UPDATE:

GOT IT!!! Finally found an awesome deal where I got the Switch, BotW and Has Been Heroes all for $569. I think that's a good deal compared to SA prices. And oh my, how amazing is this!! I've been playing Zelda non-stop, and I don't have a single bad thing to say about this game. I might have to rethink my Top Games of all time after only like 5 hours in the game

The Switch itself:

This is the bundle I bought:

I have been impressed by the built quality of the console. The controlled slide in and out of the various things with ease, and everything feels very sturdy and not flimsy at all. The quality of the screen is also really good. Now I know this is no Samsung OLED screen and only 720p, but honestly at this size, 720p really doesn't matter at all. There is no difference in the quality of the picture that I can see between playing on a TV than playing in handheld mode.

Performance wise, I am honestly flabbergasted by the fact that this console can even reproduce the graphics it does for what it is. Its like a tabled on steroids. I played BotW with the patch installed, and didn't see a single frame drop under any circumstances.

While the physical games are on the expensive part, they are 100% in line with any other console price, and Steam prices, for that matter. The digital online store prices are also very competitive and pretty much in line with what you'd expect to pay for the various games.

There are 2 things that are a bit meh about the console though. Firstly, the disc space is really tiny at only effectively 25GB that can be used for games. This can however be increased by adding an SD card, which is another investment to make. Then the controllers takes some getting use to. The A button is on a different location than an Xbox, so I had to readjust rather quickly. Also, I do feel like my hands are too big for the controllers, so again takes getting used to holding in a comfortable way. Docking the controllers into the Joycon dock thingy actually feels good, and I've spent most of my time playing Zelda like that.

I haven't had the chance to push the battery life though, but that day will come. In 2 weeks I'm flying back to SA, a 14 hour flight, so will have plenty of time to test battery life and charging time.

Overall, I am really satisfied with the Switch, and I hope that game developers see the potential and bring many games onto the platform. There are some fantastic games coming in the near future.

REVIVE!!!

So, anyone else took the plunge and bought themselves the Zelda machine? Oh yes, Mario Cart has also been released, so now there are two games that pretty much each on their own justify the cost of the Switch.

I've been absolutely blown away by the Switch. Its been amazing being able to play Zelda and Mario Cart quite literally anywhere. On the flight over from Australia, I plugged in the Switch into the charger and gamed for about half of the 14 hour flight. Was pure bliss. I now carry my Switch in my laptop bag, and when I get a bit of free time I just grab it and quickly play for a moment.

Also, Zelda and Mario Cart is really, REALLY good. Like it's impossible to comprehend how amazing these two games are. These two games alone are 100% the price of admission worth.

Nice!

Sadly when I was in the States everyone was out of stock :( You could only buy it from scalpers at like double the price. So now I'll have to wait for the new local shipments to come in, and then go down to a more reasonable price before buying one.

Really keen on getting one, though. Have you noticed any of the problems on your console that people have been reporting?

No I haven't run into any problems so far. I have pretty much been playing almost exclusively in handheld mode. So far no technical issues to speak of.

Be warned, it does seem to suffer from interference very easily when in docked mode. I struggled for a while to figure out what was going on. I had the dock around my entire entertainment area with the TV, PS4, XB1, etc and I had endless troubles with the JoyCons (specifically left) one losing connection and what what.

Simply put, moved the dock to a different location on a different screen and all was sorted.

Hmmm, see I've not yet had it setup with all my other stuff. With my traveling that's not been possible. Which is why I haven't had any interference issues with the controllers. I've heard that there are some issues with lefty though.

You have any latency issues while playing Mario Kart, and how has your overall experience been?

Well, I haven't really played online yet. Been enjoying the single player mode while I get to grips with the game. The truth is that I got a handle on the controls within the first race, but single player has been keeping me hooked. I'll try the online version a bit and let you know.

I don't know what Nintendo's idea is behind game development. I mean the games looks so cute and friendly and awesome, but they can be absolutely brutal at times. Like Zelda, Mario Kart is no exception. Never ever play this game and just automatically think you're gonna win. Those damn blue and red shells have broken my heart many times, and Grand Prix on the highest CC is near impossible for me to gain the lead at all. But the thing is that you don't need to win each race. It's just super fun playing it. And the battle modes are absolutely amazing. Those have taken most of my time, and I've become rather adept at shine thief.

I know you like racing games, but this is as arcade as racing games can get. But the race tracks are amazingly designed, some change mid race, the items keeps you on your toes at all times, the racing can be frenetic, and Luigi has the most amazing death stare when you past him. It's an extremely good game that you'd enjoy. Also, there is an option of steering and/or throttle assistance, so your boy can play along and not feel like he is getting left behind.

DieGrootHammer - so I did the deed and bought Mario Kart 8. What a boat load of fun and a surprising amount of skill is involved.

Good man. Now time for us to become friends some way through this platform so that I can throw a red shell up your bumhole...lol

Yes it is stupid amounts of fun, and definitely try battlemodes online. It's all kinds of chaos and confusion. Especially shine thief looks like a bunch of 10 year olds trying to to play soccer, they all just run after one person. It's super funny.
