The Golf Shot Thread

Last weekend I was playing mashie golf, and I got the ball on the green in one shot, and made par.
Just call me Tiger :D

Seriously though, I should really play more golf, the two or three times per year I play doesn't seem to be enough practice for me to get my handicap down. And I have a nice new bag and actual golf shoes now. I think my clubs are older than I am though, and that's saying something.

I would say Golf is 5% Clubs 25% Skill and 70% All in the mind. Having old Golf clubs does not make you a bad golfer (how did they manage in the older days?)

Just get out there, get confident in your shots with your clubs and your handicap will come down :D

Ya, I'm not blaming my kit, I'm blaming my extreme lack of practice, but new clubs would be nice to have

hehe yeah buying new stuff for golf can be addictive :D

And expensive

Definitely agree with both.

My woods (driver, 3, 5 & 7) are about 8 years old but unfortunately still in good knick (blame that on under - use).

My irons were bought second hand on a salvage sale. Ping irons. Missing the 4 iron, but hardly notice it except maybe on the longer par 3's. I estimate that they are +/- 20 to 25 years old.

My putter is older. It's a humble blade. No markings and none of the new gizmos to balance, aim or the like. But I would not give it away for anything. As you said, Roomys_ZA, it's about you and your mindset. I love the blade and generally make the greens in two putts.

Would not mind upgrading my irons. Maybe next year.

I do think as your game improves the newer equipment does allow you to do more with your shots ie shaping your shots etc. I've got a set of Golden Bear irons and a 3 wood ( I cannot hit a driver to save my life) that are easily 10 years old. They are good enough to see me through the odd golf day I get invited to.

No doubt a nice set of Blade Irons does help with your more accurate shots, but they are a lot more difficult to hit for beginner's. Putting i have found really does make or break a hole for me - 2 Shots to the green ( even on par 5's ) and 3 sometimes even 4 putt if i'm not careful enough. Having a decent putter weighted and fitted really does help a lot too.

I think this weekend will be another round of mashie golf, seeing as my driver is still a problem for me. Thanks to a few coaching lessons it seems as if my swing is improving.

I read an article the other day where someone wrote about the rise of 12 hole golf. Essentially, it's a normal golf course but with only 12 holes...

12 holes? Seems weird. If you find the article, could you post the link here. Will be interesting to read.

Oddly enough, when I was playing mashie last weekend, I pulled out a 1 wood for the one par 4 on the course, and played it better than I played any other club the whole day. My chipping was really lousy all day. That shot was great though, ended up just behind the green and chipped on, and I think I two-putted for par. That was the only hole I won for the day, the other guys were off looking for their balls in the veld.

12 Holes make for a nice shorter game, 9 holes isnt nearly enough and 18 on some days can be long esp in summer. 12 is just perfect tbh

Good point, for those of us who find they play the last hole or two in the dark if you don't get in on the morning field. Especially in Winter when it gets dark early.

I for one like the idea of a 12 hole course. I would've shared the link, but it was in a Complete Golfer. Will get the issue number if you guys are interested. The whole drive behind 12 hole courses are 1. it's quicker and will pull more people, making it more profitable and 2. will be a much more viable option for Olympic inclusion

Quote below from Dale Hayes which I get in a weekly newsletter :

"Chirp of the week. Peter Allis to Gary Player "I nearly didn't recognize you with YOUR CLOTHES ON". I visited Zebula with the Cape Golf Club Managers yesterday . What a great group of people we have in the golf industry. Managers along with Club Pros and Greenkeepers are critical to ensure golf clubs run efficiently. Pity Zebula is so dry. The fairways are almost white. Rain is needed soon. Remember golf is a game where you Yell Fore, actually score a seven, tell your partners you made a Six and write a Five on the card. Dale"

:D

Heads up....

Tournament up this weekend and picks need to be put in ASAP if you are playing Superbru.

All the best.

So difficult to pick at the best of times. Good luck with your picks.

Good lord man, you have so many points and stuff.

Anyway, I went and played Blue Valley over the weekend. Nice course and all, but I may never play golf again after the horrible round I had. So after 3 holes, I only made 4 shots. That good, except for the fact that each one ended up either in the water or in someone's house. If you know anyone living next the the 11th hole on Blue Valley, please apologise on my behalf for the window....

Yeah I'll probably be pissed at my clubs, because it's obviously their fault, for a day or two still, then the itch will hit again and before I know it I'm back on the course clubbing away...

Funny enough, even though I had a shocker of a round, hole 17 and 18 went incredibly well, which made me come up with a theory...If you are playing a bad round, you will always have a great last few holes, just so that you leave the course with a bit hope, ensuring you'll return for another round of frustration and hatred, only to play those magnificent few last holes...
