All I can say is...Make sure you have Medical Aid...
If I didn't have Medical aid last year I would have been in debt up to my ears, I don't think people realize how costly a hospital stay can be. The 76 days I spent in hospital last year cost my medical aid over R300 000, that's just for staying...That didn't include any of the tests that were done, blood tests alone were over R30 000, 1 particular scan I went for cost R60 000, then there were the countless X rays and Mri's and tons of other tests.
Wow dude...madness. How was the admin for all that afterwards? What med aid are you on?

Yep that is why currently I have the cheapest hospital plan that I could find. But as soon as I can afford it, I will upgrade it once I can afford to get a better cover, but i need one for dentistry and optometrists. But its just to expensive for me to pay R2k out of my salary for that.

My broker has said that if you take into account the difference in premiums for a plan that pays for doctors visits, dentists, and optometrists and stuff, you're better off getting the savings option on a hospital plan and paying the extra that you would have paid in premiums into the savings account. It's like twice the premiums just to cover everyday medical expenses, big rip-off.

Actually not bad, I am not exactly sure what Medical Aid I am on xD Sounds weird but we got a Family Medical aid many years ago when my dad had a accident at work, and part of his payout was full medical aid for my parents and us 3 kids for the next 30 years or something like that.

I think I got maybe 5 or 6 bills after the whole story was over and I just got my mom to forward it to the medical aid and they paid no questions asked. The medical aid sux outside of hospital though, and I pretty much had to pay for all the doctors, specialists and tests that were done outside of hospital, as they only give you R5000 for the year to spend on that. I always though, there is no way I'll ever need R5000 a year for doctors visits by omg I was so wrong lol.

Money I paid out of my own pocket was just over R100 000 throughout the year.

It literally destroyed my life and I went through hell...honestly it was the worst year of my life and I doubt I would ever survive another 1 like that. My business took a huge knock, I lost a lot of money..It put a huge strain on my friendships and relationships.

What was wrong that you had to spend that much time in hospital, if you don't mind me asking?

Honestly its to complicated to explain and I don't really like talking about it.

I hear you.

Medical expenses can take a massive toll on a family when a loved one needs care. After experiencing it with my mom's two heart bypass surgeries and her monthly prescription medication and the infinite medical expenses accrued when my dad was on his way out, I can't stress the relief I feel living in a country with decent universal healthcare.

In Sweden the amount of money you fork out for prescription medication, visits to the doctor, hospital costs (including surgery and diagnostic costs), etc are capped at 2,200kr per year (around R3,700) and is then still dependent on what you can afford.

Tax pays for everything--your government looks out for you.

Seeing the bills my parents received scared the shit out of me and they still had some of the best medical aid coverage.

I think all any of us can really hope for in life is that we don't have to have anything too serious happen to us until we're ripe old and on our way out anyway :(

Yep which is why I rather put the R200 bucks a month that I currently can afford into my Oh shit fund. Problem is I kinda depleted that after having my car fixed and paying unisa fees and book fees. But I have started saving again, hopefully soon I will have enough put away to pay the silly fees for having my wisdom teeth pulled.

I'm still without medical aid. Haven't been to the doctor in years but stories like this one always remind me why I really need to get my butt in gear and look into it.

You should man, because accidents can happen anytime! I have not been in a hospital for years but having a hospital plan at least should give you a peace of mind.

Either that or a government hospital will have to do.

Yeah I've been meaning to get to it forever. Best I get on that before I regret it.

Rather get a basic hospital plan and savings account if you can, because you never know when you might need it.

And you REALLY don't want to end up in a Gov hospital at this point. I know that most of them are really no good these days.

Medical Aid - it's a love/hate relationship. Hate the premiums, hate the fact that they don't always cover the payments and that there are many hoops to jump through - but... when I see how much they covered in full regarding hospital fees I feel a bit better about it.

Yeah people don't realize it until they go through it, or have someone close to them go through it.
It is life changing, it certainly changed mine completely. Speaking of which I need to talk to you sometime bud, me and the girlfriend are looking for a new country to move to. At the moment she is in the states and I'll be joining her soon but I don't think we'll stay there for to long, Sweden might be the perfect place to settle down.

Ya when you need it, you need it hey. Recently my dad had a quadruple bypass, and my step-mom had a hip replacement. Between them, they would have been out well over half a mil.
