Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

murfle, PsychoFish I found the problem after quite a bit of troubleshooting. It turns out it was the specific port on the router where my PC's LAN cable was plugged in. No idea why that port is only giving 100Mbps, all the rest are 1Gbps.

Perhaps it got damaged in the past when my previous modem was killed by lightning :/

Thanks for the help guys!

Nicely done! Trying new ports is usually the first thing I do at work after a lightning storm when someone's PC isn't connecting. I think I have 5 dead ports on our managed switch already...

Yeah I should probably have thought about it earlier, but it was still working fine after the lightning thing, and that has been quite some time ago. I thought cable because I do have 1 or 2 old cables around, so thought it might be that.

I hope this solves some other issues I've also been having, like random disconnects and some instability

That will likely be the cause of most of the above

I have an issue with Windoes I can't seem to resolve. I'm guessing it's tied into some form of app, background task or APK.

Last night while playing The Division I suddenly had all my Skype messages starting to pop through from throughout the day. Now this is funny as I have nothing on my machine relating to Skype, so it's obviously a tie in with Microsoft something.

Anyone have similar issues, and perhaps know a workaround or a way to remove this?

Win 10 has skype installed by default. You can probably remove it like any other win component

If I press Windows key (bring up start menu) and start typing it finds, nothing! If I check "Programs and Features" it is not on the list to be uninstalled. If I go to the Windows app store thingy page, it wants to download/install Skype.

I don't know how this is working. I sign in with my MS account when logging into my PC, it can only be getting my log in details from there as since I've had a fresh copy on Windows 10 installed, I have not loaded Skype at all.

could be your action bar. just mute it while gaming (or always)

Just a quickie. I've got my eye on the Asus VG248QE. According to a couple of reviews you need to use the display port for 144hz but the HDMI is v1.4. Shouldn't that support 144 as well?

From what I can find on the internet, HDMI 1.4, 1.4a and 1.4b only support up to 120Hz at 1080p.

Since moving into the new place I am having an issue with my PC speakers and now instead thinking of getting a headset. Does anyone have any specific preferences or recommendations? I'd like to not spend more than 1k.

Best headset I've owned. Unfortunately they price around R1300. I find them very comfortable during long gaming sessions with excellent sound quality.

You want with built in microphone or do you not care?

Wife got me a pair of Skullcandy headphones that I'm using on the PC, Tablet and Laptop for when I game, as to not offend her sensitive ears with expressions of "Die Motherf*cker" followed by gratuitous gunfire coming from the speakers.

So far I'm relatively happy with them in that it drowns out the "What the hell are you playing?" questions coming from her when I'm jamming something like Saints Row; I also can't hear the "You're going to go deaf" when I'm playing Dirt or Grid. I also can't hear her say "Hey, I'm busy talking to you" when I'm playing Skyrim.

I think this is the one she got me :
