And yes, there will be today(this evening most likely) as well as mentioned

We're going to be hit from 6-8:30 PM tonight  There goes my Guild Wars-ing. Such a crap time to be hit...just after we get home, then we only have 2 hours of power before bed.

Pfft that's nothing compared to matt and me. Our power is going to be out from 6 to 10:30pm. Here in Joburg we get 4 and a half hours of load shedding when it hits. So lets hope that there's no load shedding tonight.

Eish! Thankfully, Cape Town seems pretty on the ball...our power usually goes out a few minutes after it's due to start and every time we've been hit it comes on earlier than expected. Usually after 2 hours instead of 2 and a half. On Sunday we were only hit for 1h 45min.

Power gets cut for 2 hours, the 30mins extra is for the transition to the next area to be shed. Thankfully the last few times has been less than 2 hours. Will see how that holds however with talk about changing the shedding period to 4 hours instead of 2 :(

Ya that's going to suck, sommer wipes out the whole evening

the problem is my 1kw genny only takes 2 litres of fuel in its tank and that lasts about 2 hours roughly :(

Dohc-WP Yeah just get a 10l can, got mine from plastic world in willowbridge.

My gennie has 3l but don't know about time yet, haven't needed to use it yet since I got it last week...

How loud are these little gennies? If we were to put one on our balcony in an apartment block, would the neighbours get pissed? :D

Lydon - depends on load , I put mine in the garage and then just close the passage door, no noise at all. (with the garage door opened a bit for circulation)

I don't think it would be that much of a noise complaint on the 1kva units. Bigger does have a bit more noise to compete with :(

Eish...perhaps I need to visit a store where they can turn one on and I can see how loud they are for myself.

I'm clueless with these things. What would something like this power? Enough for a router and 2 PC's?

They are loud you have to scream to be heard near them.

Take the things you want to power W and add them all up should give you an idea what you can power.

Some advice for the guys looking at getting a generator.

Don't buy cheap brands.
Buy the best 1 you can afford. (Stretch your budget)
Honda Generators are generally the best.
If you are running it off a suicide plug make sure you know what you're doing. (This is illegal btw)
A generator is an asset, so rather get it installed properly with a switch over on the DB.

Guys buying a generator, the thing goes wrong (Under warranty) but the shop can't have it repaired as there are no parts available and they aren't willing to swap it out seeing as its over a year old.

Most important:
Generators can last a long time (Mine is 6 years old). Look after them and service them, keep them out of the rain ect.

I've heard and seen some pretty horrible things when it comes to generators.

Thanks for the advice. This sounds like it can get pretty pricey and involve a lot of work, just to avoid the odd 2 hours of no electricity here and there. I guess we'll have to wait and see how bad loadshedding gets before potentially taking the plunge. It isn't the end of the world at the moment. It's a nice to have :)

If they're really so loud that you need to scream over them, then it won't work in our apartment block anyway :(

Well it depends on what you want and need.
Diesel generators are usually not as loud as petrol generators. You get silent generators as well but they cost an absolute fortune.
My generator is fairly loud, 5.5Kva Petrol but I've not had 1 noise complaint.

I just know that Eskom are not capable of doing anything right, and the chances of Stage 4 load shedding this winter is pretty high. I can't not have power for 8 hours of the day.

At this point, my biggest concern is noise. But I'm not going to spend a fortune on a silent generator. If we can source something small that's enough to power a router and 2 PC's without annoying the neighbours, I'd be happy. But that sounds like it's easier said than done.

Never heard of a suicide plug before, you learn something every day...
