Woo! Load shedding, woo!

Now here in the city, I have a small Inverter Generator from Ryobi which provides enough power for my computer (with 3x 32" LED TVs), router, a energy saver light and my whole TV / DSTV / Home theatre system. The big difference is though that it provides very stable power for electronics.

Care to elaborate a bit on the make and size of the generator you have now, as well as how much it cost?

It is a Ryobi 1000W Inverter Generator. Comes with 2 years warranty. I originally bought it when thieves destroyed our power sub-station and the power was going to take a week to repair, so I paid R4000 at Builders Warehouse, but I'm sure you could get it for cheaper on special or something. Was bad timing so couldn't wait for specials. My main requirement though was to have stable power through the inverter that the generator sends the power through which is why I went for this. A selling point was also the label that says "40% more quiet than other generators", although, that opinion is debatable.

We weren't on the stage one schedule at all today, so it didn't affect us tonight. One of the women at work was freaking out we weren't load shed this morning from 6-8:30, and how she made arrangements to make breakfast early or something... She kept saying "If you say you are going to do it, then do it!", even though I kept saying we weren't on the stage one schedule anyways... It really isn't that confusing. Just check loadshedding.eskom.co.za and their twitter page, and ignore everything else. They've been at least 95% accurate in our area.

Holy crap are you in Paarl?! I swear I had that exact same discussion today!

My response was simply, oh goodie - we weren't load shed! As if it is THAT big of a deal, just cope with it and move on already...
ViperGTI - that actually looks like a brilliant idea. Gonna check it out over the weekend.

Nope, opposite corner of the country... Some people just live to be stressed out. I just had a thought... Maybe I should carry around syringes of stuff to help people relax... I think my job would be a lot easier.

Wow that is smaller than I was expecting. Also you run your pc, home theater, tv, etc on 1000W? Is it a low power PC?
I'm just wondering because my home theater system is 1510W alone :/
My pc uses about 460W, still add the tv, some lights, and perhaps a microwave. I was looking to get a 3.5-4kVA generator.

We got clever, we added a 2 plate gas stove in the kitchen for when there is no power - we even have a kettle for the stove top :P

Been hearing more and more of companies assisting various municipalities with a "2 week disaster plan", is this just hype or should Joe Soap be getting ready for the inevitable collapse we are facing ?

What would you do to get ready for it ?

I've read about getting cash reserves ready and storing water etc. But in all honesty what on earth are we going to do if this does come to pass ?

Guess it is better to have those plans in place and not use them, than need them and not have them in place.

However the chances of a national blackout are really small if you ask me. Even a small chance is still a chance of it happening though :/

I can't really afford to be ready for it. It's definitely a very possible reality looking at the way things go in this country.

Any one that lives in Pretoria East that has access to a reliable time table for load shedding?
I can't seem to find one anywhere that is accurate or kept up to date regularly

But then again Flex I suspect you dont live in the Cape :P

Cape town is like clock work

Also remember that Eskom is the evil ones, they are terrible. So far, we are only getting load shedding after 4pm and it stops again at 10pm

Eskom has announced that there will be a complete three day blackout from 29-02-2015 until 31-02-2015. Mark your calenders! "whistling:
