Woo! Load shedding, woo!

Basically check the Eskom Loadshedding site (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/) to see which loadshedding stage is active (Stage 1, 2 or 3).
Then look up your area at Tshwane's site (http://www.tshwane.gov.za/Services/Electricity/Pages/LoadShedding.aspx). Once you have your area number, you can check on the top 3 tables when your power will be off.

For instance, my area (Rooihuiskraal North) is in group 13. So our normal outage time is from 14:00 to 16:30... Stage 1 only on certain days and Stage 2 every day of the week. For Stage 3, we're off at the same time but also from 06:00 to 08:30.

The same with my squash partner here in Centurion. Not sure why. Maybe you/he is on the same grid as an important government building?

Yes, although my PC is idling when the TV is on (so not gaming at watching tv at same time). PC has a 750W PSU. Home theater system must be on in order for my TV to work because all my devices go through it. I have the Sony 7.2 system (2000W), but obviously I'm only using a fraction of the capacity.

I guess a 4kVA should work, although not sure how stable to power to the computer will be. It could just be that my UPS was too sensitive or something hence my problems.

Nope nope, have never gotten load shedding at 06 as stated on the time tables

Yeah I looked at a suitable PSU for my PC, and it will cost about R2000. Now the question becomes do I want to spend that much money (+ R6000 for the generator) or just be without power for 2 hours.

A generator for me makes sense since I'm working from home. 2.5 hours a day is very valuable.

If you working it is important to have one unless your laptop has a 3 hour battery and 3g internet.

Don't see the point of having one here yet as it doesn't happen too often to warrant R6000.
 
Not sure how valuable this will be to many of you but I am currently working on an app that sends out notices for load shedding. Currently I only have it working on the Cape Town Municipality list. It will send you an email notice whenever the load shedding status has changed along with (if applicable) the time/s you will be affected for that day.

I'm busy working on the web registration portion and there will have to be some in-house testing before we make it public.

Are you close to a hospital ?

Got a few people lucky enough to be within 250m of a hospital and thus far they just laugh at me when I mention load shedding... I am tempted to find their powerbox and bring a big hammer :P

Going offline at home from 16:00, thats when I leave work. Looking forward spending quality time in traffic.

My wife works at the hospital in town, and they also get load shedding. They have a generator though (obviously) to keep things going when shed.

That probably the thing that irritates me the most about this load shedding... All the traffic! People really start driving like idiots :/
