Serious Sam 3: BFE (Xbox 360) – Backpedalling to mediocrity?

24 October 2012

Serious Sam 3: BFE has been out on other platforms for quite some time now, but the over-the-top in-your-face shooter has finally made its way to Xbox Live Arcade, but is it the nostalgic reimagining you’ve been hoping for?

Serious Sam 3: BFE on XBLA currently holds a Metascore of 72, and Gamerankings of 81%.

Things are looking pretty positive on the aggregate side, but while the critics praised the PC version, what are the thoughts on the console iteration?

Canadian Online Gamers – 82/100

“It won’t win any beauty pageants or appraisal for artistic ingenuity, and it probably won’t be marveled at for its in-depth story and character development; but if you crave that old fashioned, non-stop mayhem of an old school first-person shooter, no one does it better and with more attitude then Serious Sam.” Read the full review.

Planet Xbox 360 – 8/10

“While Serious Sam 3 doesn’t quite evolve as highly as other quality first-person shooters on the market, it’s one of the best – and most affordable – ones when it comes to the Xbox Live Marketplace downloadable front.” Read the full review.

Gamereactor Denmark – 7/10

“Best played with friends, but if you do, you’ll get a delightfully simple and chaotic experience from the old school, where tactics are shunned and constantly squeezed triggers are rewarded.” Read the full review.

4Players.de – 56/100

“In his best moments Sam is still Sam, with action as shallow as powerful. But most of the time he feels like a shadow of his former self.” Read the full review.

Video Game Writers – 3.5/5

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a by-the-numbers throwback to the Doom and Duke Nukem days of non-stop, where-do-they-keep-coming-from FPS mayhem. If that’s your wheelhouse, then it’s well worth the 1200 Microsoft Points asking price.” Read the full review.

DieHard Gamefan – “Mediocre”

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a welcome addition to the 360 library, harkening back to the “old days” of first person shooters in a way that’s intense and pulse pounding, and while the game isn’t a must have title, genre fans will find it worth the money.” Read the full review.

Looks like Serious Sam 3: BFE is hitting most of its targets, appealing to the old-school nostalgia of run-‘n-gun first-person shooters. Are you going to drop the Microsoft Points on Serious Sam 3?
