In 1999, Billy Mitchell was the first person to achieve a perfect score in Pac-Man.
In a recent interview with Great Big Story, Mitchell reveals how he got to the end and the surprise waiting for him.
“You start off on the first board, and on board 21, that’s where it reaches the maximum difficulty,” Mitchell said.
“You have to navigate all the way to board 255 doing the same repetitive thing. You can’t miss a dot, a prize, a blue man. You can’t die once.”
Upon reaching level 256 however, there is only enough memory to render half of the board, leading to a bittersweet realisation.
“You get to the end, and there’s nothing to do but die.”
