Want to play Xbox One offline?

Are you annoyed that the Xbox One needs to “phone home” every 24 hours in order to play games you spent your hard-earned money on?

Well you’re in luck – Microsoft’s Xbox executive Don Mattrick has a solution for you to play games offline:

Yup, that’s right, if you want an offline Xbox, get an Xbox 360 – easy as that!

Microsoft has faced an onslaught of criticism from the Internet-police since the reveal of the company’s next-gen console and its “draconian” DRM structure.

Aside from having to check in with Microsoft every 24 hours (and not being able to function as a gaming console until such time as you do), the machine also imposes restrictions on sharing and trading games.

Microsoft has largely down-played the issue, seemingly oblivious to regions where Internet connectivity isn’t freely available and/or affordable.

Taking its cue from the backlash, and presumably the campaign calling for a DRM-free PlayStation 4, Sony undercut Microsoft at the E3 conference by announcing that their next-gen offering would be functional offline and would be $100 cheaper.

Both Sony and Microsoft are planning a staggered launch for their consoles, so South African gamers might only get their hands on next-gen gaming in 2014.
