The official Witcher 3 thread

So apparently there will be a 2nd playable char in the new Witcher :wtf:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/06/the-witcher-3-has-another-playable-character

You should read the books, if reading's your thing. Most of them have been translated into English, and they're really quite good. They're all prequels to the games as well.

I don't consider it spoilers, because this is all freely available and will most likely be covered in the prologue / introduction of the game. The books have been out for a very long time after all ;) The only two people it could be are either Yennefer (the black haired mage) or Ciri (the white haired girl). Ciri has Witcher training and is basically Geralt's adopted daughter and I highly doubt that they'll make a whole new combat system just for Yennefer, and it makes sense story wise for them to focus on Ciri.

I won't say much else, but there is really some fantastic lore in the series. Although portrayed as kind of "generic" enemies in the trailers, The Wild Hunt is far more complicated than they seem. Something I feel the games really haven't covered all that well is conveying the great lore of the world. Everything from the sorceresses to the Conjunction of the Spheres - the way the current world was created basically - are all great twists to common tropes. Andrzej Sapkowski wrote some fantastic stuff, and hopefully things will be better explained in TW3. They kind of have to be I guess, otherwise most people won't know what's cutting here :D

The Witcher 3 has been delayed till May 19th.

Dear Gamers,

Ever since we started working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we knew it would be an ambitious game. We wanted, and still aim, to give you an incredible experience, an epic adventure in a vast, completely open fantasy universe.

The sheer size and complexity of The Witcher, key features of the title, have had a decisive impact on production. Now, nearing the end of our work, we see many details that need to be corrected. When we release the most important game in our studio’s history, we must be absolutely sure that we did everything we could to limit any bugs to a level that will allow you to enjoy the game thoroughly.

With this in mind, we took another look at current workloads and what they mean for the team. Even though everyone is working at full speed, we concluded that we need another 12 weeks, so we are shifting the release date of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to May 19th, 2015.

We owe you an apology. We set the release date too hastily. It’s a hard lesson, one to take to heart for the future. We know what we want to do to make Wild Hunt one of the best RPGs you will ever play. And we continue to work hard to achieve just that. So, we apologize and ask for your trust.

Thank you for the all support you show us on a daily basis. We truly do appreciate it. It has fueled us in our passion since the start and will continue to do so.

Pros: It releases closer to my birthday, which is May 7th :D I get to take a day or two (or a week :p) off work
It takes balls to delay it again, which will hopefully mean a better experience for the players
Cons: Damn it! Another 2 months wait :/
It may also authenticate the rumors that were going around on Neogaf that the game is in a bit of trouble, and that the team has been in crunch since last year.

I can't help but think that this has something to do with the uproar people are having about a supposed visual downgrade. There's like a 140 page thread on the official forums, it's actually gotten out of control. Just because certain textures looked a bit worse in the newest trailer, doesn't mean that the game is doomed. It could simply be that they're showing the lowest common denominator, ie console footage. I think it still looks great, and will probably push a lot of systems to their max.

Didn't know about the thread on the official forum but I did notice it in the video, was actually gonna ask if it was console footage because it didn't look anything as good as the previous vid.

It's odd. If I recall correctly, they weren't actually expecting to be nominated - or win - an award at The Game Awards, so the trailer was basically thrown together at the last minute. That was the official stance anyway. They do have an advertising agreement with Microsoft however, so it could be that they're just showing console footage. It could even have been from an earlier build, where perhaps certain features weren't fully optimized yet.

Something I noticed from watching the footage on gamersyde is that while some environments looked great, others noticeably lackluster. I'm under the impression that they mashed together different scenes from different builds across the three platforms, but who really knows except for them. What I do know, is that the screens from that Japanese magazine showing the (then current) PS4 version looked fantastic, and certain aspects, especially the lightning and face textures, looked better than the 35 minute footage they showed a couple months back (which was apparently based off a 10 month old build anyway). Here's a comparision and additional screens.

Downgrade or no, it'll still probably be too much for my system :p

Yeah i suppose we can't say for sure but having watched both of them again I can def confirm the new trailer/vid is poor if I'm honest...if that is the xbox one version I feel sorry for them lol.

They should really say which builds they use for the vids, will help them avoid stuff like this in the future.

The amount of detail they are putting into this game just warms my heart.

Second playable character has been revealed as Ciri.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed you won't be able to switch between her and Geralt at will, but rather at certain moments in the plot you'll assume control of her. These moments will, by the way, be very significant in terms of the story.

Dude, you missed out on quoting the best part :P

...she'll be fast and agile, and will also be able to blink.

It'll will be interesting to see how they handle her source powers. Although she has similar sword fighting skills as the witchers, she can't use signs or potions (if they're following the book lore), so she should hopefully be quite different to play as.

System requirements revealed:

Minimum System Requirements
Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660
AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
RAM 6GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
Direct X 11
HDD Space 40 GB

Recommended System Requirements
Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz
AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770
AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
RAM 8GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
Direct X 11
HDD Space 40 GB

Shit, my current GPU doesn't cut it. Will have to make a plan or play on PS4 first.

Pfffft. My 6 month old gaming PC just cuts the minimum spec, but I'm below recommended. :(

lol Your rig will run the game perfectly fine bud.
Never ever ever bother checking recommended specs.

I mean for recommended they say either a GTX770 vs a R9 290.
R9 290 is a much faster card than a GTX770..lol On top of that a R9 280X is as fast as if not faster than a GTX770.

Still, they recommend an I7. But I guess the K-version I5 is still good enough for most gaming. :D

Besides, I'm not that much of a FPS chaser. Anything above 40 is acceptable for me. Beyond that I struggle to see or feel a difference in gameplay...

Unless the game takes advantage of Hyper Threading (Which none of the Witcher games have ever done) The i5 will be as fast as the i7.
