Fallout: New Vegas official discussion thread

What's that red beret all you guys are wearing? Wish I could post a pic of my dude, but I'm playing on console.

^ haha going savage there with the rebar an concrete :D

Vlad it gives you +1 End and +1 Per

So far the best hat.

Ah ok, I see. The only hat I have is a cowboy hat with +1 Per, but then I haven't really looked for any hats.

So far my character is an evil sob. Apparently stealing is considered very bad karma . I didn't get caught though so ideally I reckon I shouldn't get docked for it. Especially to this level.

Yeah the karma system is a bit messed up since even when you killed everybody or they have left you still loose karma for taking their stuff but I mean they left the place or they are all dead.

I have so much karma atm a bit of bad karma does not really matter to me.

Karma is a bitch:p But it does not matter if somebody sees you after all you are robbing the dead. :p

Getting this tomorrow, super amped. Any suggestions for a first time Fallout player?

Don't go hardcore and don't go easy settings. And other than that enjoy.

Speech barter and lockpick is pretty important in nv more so than that of fo3. You don't have to take a trait at the start of the game but you got that option. Talk to unique characters(they the ones with names like clara or timmy) Other than that juts enjoy the game. And if creeps are to strong in one location try to go around them or go back.

Basically you have to decide how you want to play the game. If you're a looter that likes to open every chest in sight, get all the items in the game, then go for lockpicking. There are lots of doors and chests and stuff that requires quite a high lockpicking skill to open. Never know what's in there, at least I don't :D

There are 4 main weapon types in this game. Guns, which include pistols, rifles, shotguns etc. Then there's energy weapons like laser pistols, plasma rifles etc. Also, there's melee weapons like slegehammers, golf clubs, machetes etc. Lastly there is explosives like dynamite, bottlecap mines etc. So decide which weapon you'd like to specialize in and rank your skills accordingly. I think on my second playthrough I'm going to create a melee charcter :D

Other than that, just explore, talk to everyone and try and uncover as many quests and side quests as you can. There are a LOT of quests in this game.

For combat, make use of the VATS system. That allows you to take aimed shots at enemies individual bodyparts. So for instance, if there is a strong and fast enemy, try to take out his legs with mines. There was this one time when a glowing ghoul attacked me and I have to reload like freakin' 4 times because he was so damn strong compared to me at that stage. And blerry fast as well. So I put some mines down and crippled his legs. That way you can take him out nicely as he tries to stumble toward you :D

You can also bind your weapons to specific number keys. If you are in your inventory, you hold "1" then click on a weapon to assign it to that slot. Then you do the same for 3, 4, 5 etc. For instance, I put my pistols in 1 and 3. My shottie on 4, sniper rifle on 7 and my dynamite on 8.

The "2" key switches between ammo types in your currently equipped weapon. For instance, having a rifle equipped, pressing 2 will switch between hollow point or armor piercing ammo, providing you have both types on you :)

That's about it, all I can think of right now. Enjoy!

That's Boone's beret. He's the night-time sniper in Novac.

(highlight text (possible spoiler)

You get that from him as you start the quest to find his wife's killer. He gives you the beret so you can wear it as a callsign when you are standing with your chosen culprit in the open.

Pretty cool hat! :D

LOL. Yeah Juice told me about it this morning. That's the first thing I'm doing when I get home tonight. Gonna let him kill someone and then I'm gonna eat them. :D

Yeah I love being a cannibal in Fallout, was a cannibal in 2 of my 4 Fallout 3 playthroughs as well. When I kill a group of people and I've taken some damage I don't use stimpaks, I eat everyone I killed. :p

possible spoiler:

When you eat 25 corpses in New Vegas you get a new perk called Dine and Dash which lets you take the human remains with you for consumption at a later stage. I have at least 5 human remains on me at any given time. :p

end possible spoiler.
