So unique browsers and page views translates into $$$?

It depends on how many of those people use adblock apps. I don't think Google pays based on page views alone. The visitors have to actually see the ads. I stand to be corrected, though.

myBroadband (and by extension myGaming) uses their own ad delivery system, and they charge, I believe, a fixed rate for advertisers, based on where their ad gets placed, or the size of the ad etc.

You can actually request a rate-card from them, and they need to be able to show traffic numbers to justify what they charge - most advertisers will want to know, up front, how many unique visitors a website gets on a monthly basis.

Of course, there are the PPC and CPM models that can be used as well. Could be any of the three. I haven't spotted any Adsense ads on the site.

Yes, adblock hurts us. Not much we can do about that except to hope enlightened users switch it off when visiting our sites. We don't want to start proactively asking people to do this.

You'll have to speak to the marketing department for the details, but in general we sell adverts by number of impressions (adverts served to a page) - hence why adblock hurts us.

We have Google Ads in the less prominent areas of the site, but the revenue from Google ads barely keeps Quinton in fresh sawdust.

I'd be happy to pause it when browsing mygaming.. Don't know if It'll make that much of a difference by myself though.. You should definitely make an announcement or something just to make us aware about it. And if the ads aren't intrusive or interfere with the myg experience it's a win-win right?

Well, I use adblock as well, but being in publishing I understand the ramifications, so I disable it on sites that I like to visit often, and by the same measure, enable on sites that have annoying adverts.

One of our tenets is to not hurt the user experience so we try and keep the ad placement as unobtrusive as possible.

I loathed that shitty WebAfrica advert that autoplayed sound a while back - we had a big argument with marketing over that one :P

I don't use adblock, I just ignore the ads, they aren't really intrusive though which is cool. I really wouldn't like an ad that autoplays sound though, but at least my speakers are usually off unless I specifically want to listed to something so I didn't notice it.

I use adblock coz I'm a compulsive spender/buyer and when I see Zando ads with shoe specials I go all bat**** cray cray... >_<

So I was in thd think tank this morning I had an idea regarding the comp system.

What if i stread of having a top 25 qualification, we work on points?

At the moment the regular and new members that actually make worthy contibutions to the forum get pushed out of the top 25 by the newbnecrospammers, forcing them to resort to drastic measures to get ba k up there. So why not combine the 2 systems?

So then for example you could say that during the comp period members have to accumulate a minimum of 100 points in order to qualify for the grand prize... or something like that.

Just a thought. Use it, don't use it :D

So more entrants into the comp, but they would stop posting when they qualify? Could work

I think they should try a competition that only relies on the rep system. You get points for giving rep, and more points for receiving rep.

And less spam hopefully, cause everyday won't be a race to stay on top. You have a week to accumulate the points you need to qualify

This is pretty similar to the initial system that was in use - users needed to accumulate a certain number of posts over the course of the comp period - usually 10 per week - so it was a really insignificant ask. Didn't really stop spam though - the most obvious being the bloke who logged in, posted 11 very obvious crappy posts in the course of 6 minutes, and then wasn't seen ever again.

Rep system is too easily abused and newcomers wouldn't stand a chance, since older members would be more likely to rep their buddies, rather than any random new entrant to the blog. You, as a person, may not intend to abuse it that way, which is great, but all things being equal it will happen somewhere ... because people.

This would open the floodgates for bias and favouritism. So I don't think that this would be fair. Especially for newbies. All the mygaming "elite" would ensure that they get their buddies in and ignore anyone they dislike or deem a threat to their little utopia.

And the rep system must be separate and associated with the comp not related to the actual rep system.

Thats why he wants it in so him and his friends only win lol

A few problems with that, and excuse me for being frank (when I use the pronoun 'you' I'm not directly referring to any one person).

The competitions are designed to boost forum activity and attract new members as much as they are to potentially reward existing members with a fun way to win a prize.

The competition structure is aside from other activity on the forum. Entering into debates about how fair this system is for old members versus new is pointless and irrelevant, much like the whining about random draws from "vote to enter" competitions. These are the competition structures and that's that. You can't complain you didn't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket; didn't win the Currie Cup because you didn't practice rugby; didn't win American Idol because you didn't try to sing; etc.

Old member entitlement attitude: while the operators of MyGaming (ostensibly myself and rpm from MyBB, with other core MyBB staff thinking happy thoughts) love the old members equally as much as the old members love each other, there's no obligation for competitions to only benefit old members. In fact, trying something like that would harm the forum and preventing that is a primary responsibility - not keeping a few complaining old timers happy.

Yes, the community is the backbone of the website and the whole point we do any of this, but it's also through MyGaming staff efforts that these competitions are possible and the website is sustainable. The community is pretty much a self-regulating environment, which is the way we like it and believe its the way everyone else likes it too. When the community wants to give away a PS4 to itself, then they are welcome to set up the competition structure and rules and handle all the complaints and potential problems (I'll sit back and get some sadistic joy that day).

Cases of "newbnecrospammers" are for the mod team to decide upon with the help of reported posts - not a subjective conclusion to be taken from a few complaining members and then blanket applied to all new registrants.

While we won't tolerate obvious spammers and shitposters (again, report them if you think this is the case), we also won't discount a new member if they worked their way into the running for the prize. How would that be fair? Looking at the current top 50, I see a good mix of new and old, and plenty of people in the lower ranks with not many activity points.

In future, we might think up new types of competitions for a change of pace, but right now, this is how it's happening.

I hope this helps explain our position on competitions.
