Diablo 3 Beta - Feedback :}

I just finished my first playthrough of the BETA with my monk.

This game is actually a ton of fun and I'm seriously looking forward to multiplayer co-op with mates.

Blizzard arent concerned with internet starved Africans! :-/

Take note (i'll keep it short):

This is a beta server
Server is in usa
There will be lag
Who said I have a pathetic connection ;). But that is still besides the point, having an uber adsl connection shouldn't be part of required pc spec.
RSA is pathetic compared the the rest of the world, even some countries in Africa is better of. What you think is good, is rather seriously downscaled internet. It is not a development house duty to ensure telecommunications are great all over, no that is rather the government and bodies that place them there, that is to blame.

Hmmm, well I'm getting home from holiday today! Gonna see if I can get beta access through my battle.net account and them ill report! I have a 1mbs line which is extremely average so I probs represent most of sa. I do realise it's a us server but there definitely will not be a sa server. Hopefully we don't have too much latency on the eu server.

Ok so Co-op is serious fun!

You can open your game to public play or join other randoms in co-op. It's a ton of fun and you can clear Act 1 in about an hour.

The beta is 1/3 or 1/4 of act one. Also I support the always online. There was a lot of duping/cheating going on in D2 even on the ladders.

Also, those talking about emu servers, it will happen most likely but will not be worth it. Think of wow's servers, they are still buggy messes, terribly bad cannot even compare to the real game....Now think diablo 3, where you do not have to pay a subscription (which was the biggest argument for using emu servers).

I hope the always online stays forever. This is one game worth buying anyway and EU servers are fine for wow lag wise, should be fine for D3 as well.

Wow is a hotkey MMO where position is almost meaningless, D3 is an action RPG where you have to dodge and teleport out of the way of nasties, sometimes even moving out of the way of powerful attacks. Latency plays a far bigger factor in the gameplay performance.

Why, what difference does it make to you if I want to dupe the shit out of my offline only character just to see what it feels like? It's like complaining about people using godmode in Doom or Quake, coz you know "their cheating".

I fully support an always online, authenticated multi-player and ranked single player mode, I just don't see why people shouldn't be allowed offline only characters.

A big part of the game is multiplayer co-op. That, along with the public auction / real money auction houses, there is no other way to do it than to have it online.

I'd also enjoy a separate offline-only mode if it had no impact on the online component.

I beg to differ mate. Positioning plays a massive role in WOW... Its just about everything. Sure it does not really matter during leveling and questing, but the real part of WOW is in the raiding and with your comment I can just see that you have never raided hardcore in say a top 300 world guild where you compete for server 1st heroic kills etc.
1 lag spike or wrong positioning and you can wipe the raid for 24 other people...

And when you get into PVP latency plays a massive role also.

The fact is, Diablo 3 is just a bit more casual as a game (for obvious reasons), but latency does matter in both of these games.

I also support the always online of D3 and I think ppl are just making a way to big a deal regarding it. I'm also not blind to the fact why people want an offline only mode, put imo the biggest moaners are the pirates and hackers, so in the end...
/careface from me....

So I thought I knew a lot about diablo but I didn't realize it ran like an MMO with constant server pinging! I mean what's the point if you're not co-oping or pvping. It's not like you can randomly run into other people when playing solo! This sounds like bs anti piracy to me! So I there never going to be an entirely offline mode?

Yes when they dropped LAN play they made D3 an online only game.

I tried to play the Diablo III beta last night, but as my internet connection goes through sporadic bouts of instability, I found it unplayable. If this is how the game is going to work [constant connection needed], I think I'll pass-as I did with StarCraft II. I hope that this sort of security measure does not become more commonplace. While I know that there are local server hacks out there, I am not THAT technically inclined and prefer not to tread on ActiBlizzard's toes.

Yep, that's why I am still not sure whether I will buy the game or not. I was in Europe for the last two weeks, and its very sad to say but even when playing from EU to US with a considerably lower ping than we get here I still experienced sections of which were unplayable.

I expect the game to be an enormous failure in SA, as the vast majority of the gamers in SA don't have the technical know-how to tweak their accounts and latency in such a way that they will really be able to enjoy the game (aside from the above-mentioned unplayable times).

It almost sounds like you expect it to get better and that we will have 50ms latency to the US in a few years. I regret to inform you that we are already extremely close to the theoretical maximum speed (due to that damn speed of light constant) and that your latency will only ever be able to increase by 5-10%. This is of course if you have no shaping whatsoever and a fixed-line connection.

We are getting the short end of the stick, and frankly if the development houses don't give a damn about playability in other countries then they shouldn't even bother marketing the products there. If the spikes don't disappear soon, I won't be buying the game. I won't be one of those who say "Ah damn you screwed me over, but I'll buy it anyway".

What I don't get is that my blizzard pings (wow/diablo) are around the 500ms mark, but my bioware ping (swtor) has been sitting around the 210ms mark. Same connection, same account.

In other news, I finished the beta play on the monk, witch doctor and demon hunter. All nice classes, but the monk still feels the strongest. I started playing on the barbarian for a bit too and he simply destroys everything in sight. I've never been a fan of the dumb-brute class in games, but I might just choose to level one when this game launches. I thought the demon hunter looked the coolest until I grouped up with a mate's barbarian who dual-wielded 2 (what appeared to be) scythes. It made him look like a bad ass harvester.

I'm comparing Apples to Oranges, you're comparing Apples to genetically enhanced Oranges. Also you shouldn't assume stuff about people. In your example latency most certainly affects your performance and even your ability to succeed so it's not "just fine for wow" as was the point I was arguing.

That's the top 0.1% though and during average play D3 is far more latency sensitive than WoW. If you still think WoW is all that latency sensitive go play a game of Bloodline champions where you actually have to aim all your abilities (like D3) and see if 250ms is perfectly O.K.

Anyway I'm waiting for all those prepurchase day one dudes to let me know what the lag is like in SA then I'll decide for myself if I can deal with it. :)

Diablo 3 = US
SWTOR = EU
WoW = Unknown?? :)

The question I keep asking myself is "If the new Dungeon Siege or Titan Quest or whatever RPG you love came out without LAN play and you have to play with MMO-type latency even when playing SP, would you still buy the game?" - My answer is a resounding no, I wouldn't.
