Lord of the Ringsâ„¢ to become Free-To-Play from September 2010.

It's a pity i couldn't get around to liking this. Pretty environments, but my characters felt too 'stiff', and i guess I couldn't get past that, along with the complexity of crafting and the lack of any real sort of pvp. Maybe F2P will make it something to do on the occasional weekend, though.

Yeah it definitely isn't for everyone. When you compare it to other MMO's it certainly has strong pro's AND cons.

I enjoy the PVE in this one immensely. Enough not to make me even bother with the "Monster play PVP" part. Thing is, pvp goes against the LOTRO lore.

Yes, elves & dwarves & humans were at loggerheads, but that's before this setting. If you're a fan of the books (not just the movies), you'll really enjoy the leveling experience in this game a lot more than striving for end game raiding etc.

Doing skirmishes are much more fun right now. It's pretty much co-op battlegrounds where you get an NPC soldier whom you train up with skills etc. The skirmish marks (emblems) you get from it can be used to buy you gear/cosmetic items/rep or skills for your skirmish NPC. Skirmishes are battles that took place at key points in the lore - and you have to relive those battles and conquer the end bosses.

Also the complete customization of each person's character means there's not a "cookie cutter" build that 99.9% of the players use.

As for the crafting, it makes a great deal more sense to me than WoW's. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Careful what you wish for. ;)

I don't see why you're always offended when we mention the select group of WOW "stfu n00b fag anal [Dirge]" player base. You clearly aren't one of them and I can't imagine that anyone would enjoy them.

Er, i didn't mention WoW at all. You're the one making that connection, all by yourself. There were 'munchkins' and 'noobs' 'ruining my gaem' years before WoW showed up. Defensive much?
I was just pointing out every game attracts this 'hardcore' crowd that's unaccepting of anyone not like them, and it often results in elitist communities that also often end up wondering, 6 months later, where everybody else is.
You seem to be doing a hell of a job reinforcing that stereotype.

Calm down there chief. We're all friends here. :)

1) I never mentioned n00bs. In my original post that offended you, I even highlighted that I don't enjoy the elitist crowd.

2) Every game has smacktards, this one just has considerably less. How is that a bad thing?

3) The LOTRO community is EXTREMELY helpful to new members. Unlike the WoW idiots who will call you a "n00b fag" when you ask a question.

4) Re-read this thread and the other Lotro one and have a looksee at how we try help each other.

5) Come join us, we'll be glad to have you.

I was just refering to the general "munchkin" player. The guy who comes in and uses 1337 speak all the time, the people who don't res or heal even though they can. the mob thieves, the dumbass who doesn't listen in an instance and agros everything in it(all at the same time).

Munchkins, general pain in ass people.

The only thing that worries me is that with it going F2P we'd see more and more of them. While I'm not tied down to an MMO at the moment I did enjoy the time I spent with LotRO and I seriously hope Turbine is making the right choice.

Yeah, I've found the following:

1) When you're fighting mobs near an deposit, someone who saw it on their scan will stop and see if you choose to mine the deposit first instead of just running in and ninja'ing the node while you have a mob on you.

2) When you're losing a battle against a mob, they'll help you take it down even though they get no xp for it.

3) There's no spam in channels. There is a specific "advice" channel as well, which really does help a lot.

4) I haven't been sworn at once.

Wolf, I also wonder about it, but I'm sure those to whom it doesn't appeal won't stay long...and those who do like it will become VIP members, making the servers a little more populated. Which is cool! I've noticed the free accounts get limited chat abilities. Still wonder how that'll work.

I inserted a smiley face earlier, bitches love smiley faces you know. I don't think it worked.

Look I'm not just another WoW whore. I have played a number of other mmo's before for varying amounts of time, LotrO being one of them.

I found LotrO to be friendly overall but 'inaccessible' to a new player. Yes it's playerbase is mature, but it can also be condescending. I actually witnessed some of these 'mature' players ripping into a new clueless player and obviously a WoW player who was trying out something new, who was comparing LotrO to WoW in some general chat channel, and it wasn't pretty. The game has it's fair share of jerkwads. Seen the same in WAR and all it does is drive off potential new players resulting in an ever shrinking population. I might give it another try now that it's free but I find almost all of these so called great, friendly communities to be so hostile to WoW players it's not funny. Friendly alright, as long as you aren't some *hiss spit* Wowfag.

Anyway, my biggest gripe with LotrO is, like Tobold says, it's virtually identical to WoW in the PVE dept. I can't imagine myself playing two questgrinders at the same time. Maybe if i ragequit WoW I'll turn to this, till then I'm looking for something vastly different to WoW as an 'off time' mmo. Probably gonna be EvE.

My personal problem with Lord of the Rings Online is that it is not sufficiently different from World of Warcraft. That is to say if I want to play a MMO where I level by moving from one quest hub to the next, and fight fantasy monsters by targeting them and using various hotkeys, I usually play World of Warcraft. When I am in one of the phases where I am burned out from World of Warcraft, I generally prefer playing something completely different. For me Lord of the Rings Online is definitely the best MMORPG after World of Warcraft using this type of gameplay, but that puts it in a bad place in my playing schedule.

anyway, my actual point
Munchkins, general pain in ass people.
Yes they're a pain in the ass, but you have to look at it another way. They create a dynamic, an 'us versus them'. Sense of competition. People will remember UO for the PKers. People will remember WoW because of 'bad pugs'. Right now you say you hate them, but you always end up telling stories about them. They create memories. It's like getting stomped by a Fel Reaver. At that point you're like 'faaahk i hate fel reavers stupid Blizzard', a year later you're all like 'I <3 fel reavers why arent there any in Northrend :-('. Or like how you HATED having to cc in BC and now there's no CC and everyones like 'we want cc back'.
In the same way you kinda miss those 'bads' and 'jerks' when they arent around to point and laugh at any more. They inject another level of challenge into the game. Hence my 'careful what you wish for' quote.

Busy resubbing at the moment :)

@Voicy, What did it cost you for the Lifetime sub? I am seriously considering it :D

I could be mistaken, but I don't think the lifetime subs are available anymore. I think they were only available around release for a few months.

I stand corrected then :D

Nah - I'm sure you were right, but they re-introduced it during May for a limited period + 50% off if you were a UK resident (Agents!) as part of the LOTRO 3yr anniversary.

This would be the perfect reason for me to return to the game. But I'm afraid of the hold it will have over me again. It's probably best to pretend I didn't see this :(.
