Woo! Load shedding, woo!

That's the page I ended up on when I Googled it.

Aside from the obvious safety issues, I can foresee really bad things happening when the power comes back on and you still have one of those plugged in to a running generator.

Well the main idea is to turn off the power to your house via the main board and then running the back feed via the generator. Once power comes back on, turn off the generator, unplug it and switch the mains back on.

But if you neglect to turn off the mains, and you suddenly have double the voltage... can't be good

I'm no electrician though so I wouldn't even consider doing something like this

Yeah a lot can go wrong if you aren't careful, hence the suicide reference.
Best is to get a proper switch over installed (Costs around R1500).

Since I'm renting I use the suicide plug method - drop mains & earth leakage, also any high use appliances (geyser / stove) then connect everything and start the generator.

Neighbour's alarm goes off when power is restored, then it is just a matter of disconnecting the generator and starting everything back up again.

As for which generator, it depends on what you need to run. If you just want your electronics and a few lights, make sure you look for an inverter generator (inverter built in) which also has the word QUIET on it ;)

If you need more power then you need to start looking at the bigger units.

Honda is by far the best choice if you can find one and have the budget. I'm quite happy with my power master though, local support in CPT as well :)

Noooo :( So close yet so far! I was hoping I could get some Guild Wars in. Sigh. Flu shots it is instead lol.

Nooooo!

Stage 1 load shedding from 17:00 until 22:00. :( I really hope Citypower can circumvent this.

Aww soli that sucks! I am hopeful to miss the loadshedding, since ours this week starts at 4pm till 6:30. Why are your hours so long tho Soli?

Luckily we are now only hit from 6pm until 10pm. So I can browse a little bit. Unfortunately we almost always get hit by 4 and a half hours at a time.

Yeah for some reason we still have power. Even though the website says we shouldn't. I switched off everything and sat and waited... yet nothing.

:D

dont worry revolution season 3 is coming to you soon :p

its sad that tax paying citizens have to be exited if the electricity doesnt go off.

Eskom a company that wants you to pay them, then asks you not to use their service , for the sake of improving their service

Same thing happened to us last night, waited 15min and no outage [emoji1]

We are currently LOAD SHEDDING

Eskom has declared Stage 1 Load Shedding from 17:00 till 22:00.

Load Shedding STAGE 1 in progress:
17:00 to 18:30 - Block 2B

18:00 to 22:30 - Block 3B

However City Power will not be load shedding all their areas of supply, due to interventions mitigating load shedding for the City of Johannesburg customers.

Our power shut off exactly at 5, was back on at 6:10. We also dont have those weird blocks of shutdown. aka the 3a and b . . . .

The 3a and b are just ways to group areas together.

https://www.citypower.co.za/customers/pages/Load_Shedding.aspx

So on that site if you pick Harveston (where I live, I'm in 3B) then select the load shedding stage then you can see when you will be load shed. :)

But welcome back Wyv! :D To the world of light.
