And think about this : This is a gaming forum. We play games. Games with profanity. Games with killing and murder. Games with gratuitous and graphic displays of violence. Games with nudity. And yet somehow the profanity is the most offensive part? lol?

Show me a 13 year old who hasn't heard a good majority of the words used on this forum. People keep talking about keeping it "PG-13", but the cat's out of the bag, I'm afraid. (And as a matter of curiosity, does anyone honestly think that children younger than 13 are actually reading or partaking in these forums?)

And finally consider the fact that the stupid swearing filter is getting in the way of valid conversation. It keeps blocking out entirely non-profane words. Why should I have to sift through a bunch of asterisks every second post just to figure out what someone was saying? How is it reasonable that anyone expect me to do this just to participate in the forum? I'd argue that the swearing filter ON is more likely to reduce the reader base compared to the few wet blankets who'd boycott the site just because someone mentioned urine.

very well said old chap

Yes, that's what decades of feminism was aiming to promote : special treatment of women.

How the hell is it about them if you're the one feeling bad using it around them?

Here's a tip : If you don't want to swear around a certain gender, don't. But don't suggest that everyone follow your lead or that the forum should change its rules to cater to your preferences just because you're prudish.

Yeah, I was never really a fan of individual discrimination.

The sheep could always just leave?

Indeed. And note how one can be utterly offensive without resorting to expletives of any kind. Conclusion : it's not the words but what's actually being said.

Of course, you're free to freak out over someone making a reference to bowel movements if you wish, but please do understand that it has no rational basis whatsoever.

Well, considering the fact that sex scenes are starting to be introduced into games, discussing them is only natural given the nature of the forum. It is a gaming forum after all.

Same can be said for any post, including this one. Instead of ranting about the latest outrage, why don't you just delete it all instead of clicking the post button. Makes the forum a much more pleasant place, no?

P.S. This post was purposely written in an antagonistic style in order to show that when considering what is offensive and what is not, that what someone says is far more important than the words they choose to say it.

Nice, well thought out post. But you said hell and now i have to report you...:p That was a JK btw.

This could lead to the slippery slope dillema. If you allow swearing on this site, who knows how many complaints and grievances MyGaming will have. We dont know if children with profiles on the forums wont swear like its Bloody Monday. My vote was that we should be allowed to swear in context, however for MyGaming's sake, i wouldnt allow it.

No one swears like it's bloody monday now, so why should it change? This is very obviously a mountain out of a molehill type of thing and as is evidenced by the poll, the prudes are in the minority ...... but as usual, on all forums, the minority will always try to have their own way

This. I've bolded my favourite bits.

Also, lol @ stuff about swearing around women. Do you guys ever actually talk to real women?

On the issue of kiddies - come on. I'd heard everything by the time I was 8 or 9. And I heard it all at school. Kindly disabuse yourselves of this OH, BUT THE WEE BAIRNS nonsense. It's nothing more than useless condescension playing at moral purity.

and what would u classify as a 'real' woman? most are so fake nowadays anyways ^.^

Meatsacks with breasts and vaginas. Kinda like the meatsacks with penises, but the other type.

The rest is just personality.

Slippery slope is actually a logical fallacy.

And I can easily turn it around and say that we should ban everything short of the Sims (and then the bathroom planning should also be redacted for obvious reasons) on the basis that some fundamentalist prude thinks that games rot your brain.

Nevermind me then. It seems chivalry is seen as a weakness.

btw, Xarog ... feminism was kinda the polar opposite of special treatment for women.

I know how you feel. Seems nice guyz do finish last.

LOL @ Azimuth.

Sounds very ANC attitude like :p

Well, considering the fact that sex scenes are starting to be introduced into games, discussing them is only natural given the nature of the forum. It is a gaming forum after all.

Let me just correct, I have no problem on the discussion but:

This shows the point of drawing a line. There is nudity on TV, games - we're all naked under our clothes - why cant we post nude pictures on the forums? Sex is also natural, in games, on tv... internet has tons of that too. Why cant we post porn here? These arguments against and for swearing apply to these topic. How can you justify swearing and not nudity, not sex? Some people are offended - bah, some people are offended with swearing. It's distasteful.. why, I feel that way about swearing too. "It's the rule" - well, that was with the swearing too. Ultimately a line needs to be drawn. This example is a little bit extreme - but it highlights a point because it's extreme.

And think about this : This is a gaming forum. We play games. Games with profanity. Games with killing and murder. Games with gratuitous and graphic displays of violence. Games with nudity. And yet somehow the profanity is the most offensive part? lol?

So lets post some gore and nudity, and some sex too... hey, it's in the games!

Show me a 13 year old who hasn't heard a good majority of the words used on this forum.

All 13 year old have seen themselves naked, does this justify child porn on the site? Of course not.. unless it's used in context? of course not. Rules (and laws) are set.

And finally consider the fact that the stupid swearing filter is getting in the way of valid conversation. It keeps blocking out entirely non-profane words.

Filter is annoying.

The final word on this from my part, is I have no problem with swearing but the fact of the matter is mygaming is (or was) a family site. Just because most play GTA4 doesn't mean someone who plays wii only games has to be exposed to random swearing. The rules were set. If they change, so be it, that's the nature of the mygaming website.

When I joined here there were no rules on swearing what so ever, it wasn't an issue, just don't use it against another member, but than it falls into the allready exsiting rule of not bashing other membes. This filter is causeing much more discomfort and anoyance than the swearing did in the 1st place. So I say, remove it, and remove it ASAP. It is irritating the life out of me and many others.

And that is what it comes down to ...... appease the minority and end up with a dead quiet Disney site or appease the majority and leave the site as is, growing all the time and a generally fun place to be around. I think it's obvious which choice it would be.

Ahem, and I quote:

"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

Sure, perfect business sense but then change the "By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."?
