All things Sport

I'm supporting RIC, KVY and BOT next year. I do hope BUT gets a drive, he surely deserves one, and proved it again(!) over the weekend. The way McLaren is treating their drivers, though, I really hope he gets to drive somewhere else, and if I were ALO, I'd be apprehensive.

I think that you can't talk about BUT being up in the air without looking at the reason behind it: suddenly there are 4 less spots to drive in next year.. The FIA keeps going on about cost cutting and even allowing 24 drivers on the grid (which I would love to see), but the way they keep screwing over the small teams is ridiculous. They're killing the sport from the inside.

I disagree on two point, though: 1) I don't mind the engines. B) I'm definitely going to keep watching!

Hehehehe I think we will have to agree to disagree.

Button is and never has been a favourite of mine, between him and Massa they need to retire now. Grosjean and Maldanado as well. Im disappointed with Perez and Hulkenberg this season. Alonso is making the biggest mistake of his career, Rosberg is still an under rated driver, I believe he has more potential if he is in a team that supports him.
Unfortunately the FIA and other people such as Bernie and Max has destroyed the sport for me, Most of the race tracks are boring and unimaginative, overtaking is based on KERS and a little skill. This season has been one of the most boring seasons in a long while - I think the Shumi era was close to it.
As for the engines, I am very disappointed with a lot of the choices made to "improve" the sport = If they want to improve the budgets and encourage the teams to stay in a budget maybe they should lower the amount of teams and make it three cars per team. If they want to regulate the cars so much, then they might as well go back to the A1 and participate in that.

Formula one was always and has always meant to me, speed, beautiful cars, the noise, the emotions, the chills, the racing and pushing of themselves to become the best no matter what. They are slowly taking all of it away. They are changing it into A1 . . . Generic boring cars, no marvel of engineering. No race drivers with so much bling on their ears that I still can't believe he doesnt have holes in his head from the helmet after a race.

I have never missed a race in my life, no matter where I was, what I was doing, I would not miss a live race - no matter what the time. Now we have spectacles that costs millions to run, with half empty stands. Why is it that F1 lost almost all of their fans, when if you look at MotoGP - the races are sold out EVERY time. Obviously something has gone seriously wrong. And I really don't believe I will be glued to my tv next year. Even this year I have barely debated with anyone about F1, I havent even bothered to keep the F1 thread updated with the news. I cannot proudly say I am an F1 fan, because no one is taking the sport seriously.

Last week’s Jules update
NOVEMBER 25, 2014 / GARY HARTSTEIN
First of all, as many of you have pointed out, we once again owe a deep and sincere thank you to Jules’ parents.

Obviously this is good news, at a few levels. Being closer to home, to friends and family, is immensely important.

Knowing that Jules is breathing on his own is also very good news. Not so much prognostically; rather because it’s one less open door to potentially life-threatening infections.

The press release also says that the “medically induced coma” has been ended. Remember, ALL patients with severe head injury are anesthetised. This is to allow them to be ventilated by a respirator, and to better control many of the patient’s parameters during the first crucial days.

During the acute phase (roughly speaking from ICU admission until the intracranial pressure/brain swelling was brought under control) if the intracranial pressure rises too high, and the usual means fail to bring it down, this anesthesia (itself a medically induced coma) is deepened significantly, as a last-ditch effort to control the pressure. This was done, as you remember, for Michael Schumacher. It was also almost certainly carried out for Jules. This deep anesthetic is usually only used for a few days up to a week or two (rarely more). Then the background “routine” anesthetic is also slowly weaned. The speed of this process depends on the patient’s circumstances and how withdrawal of sedation is tolerated. This was presumably done prior to Jules being transferred back to Nice.

But he is still unconscious.

The fact that Jules is no longer being sedated, is no longer receiving anesthetic drugs to maintain a state of PHARMACOLOGIC coma, but remains unconscious at almost two months post injury, is obviously of great concern. But his is perfectly compatible with the clinical course of a patient with severe diffuse axonal injury who was unconscious on hospital admission.

While statistically the situation is fairly dire, statistics are just that – numbers. Let’s wait, support the Bianchis in any way we can, and constantly hope things get better.

Sorry for the delay in posting this. Lots of things going on, and just could not find time to write.

Terrible news about Phil Hughes today...

For those that dont know, he was struck in the head while batting in an Australian domestic match on Tuesday. He passed away today after being in a coma since the incident.

Only 25... one of the most promising youngsters in world cricket taken way before his time... huge loss to Australian cricket... And i really feel for the even younger Sean Abbott who bowled the ball...

I do wonder what this will do to the game of cricket... Will there be a call for better more "full" helmets? Will they limit the bouncer even more than it has been to date?

Hehehehe I think we will have to agree to disagree.

Button is and never has been a favourite of mine, between him and Massa they need to retire now. Grosjean and Maldanado as well. Im disappointed with Perez and Hulkenberg this season. Alonso is making the biggest mistake of his career, Rosberg is still an under rated driver, I believe he has more potential if he is in a team that supports him.

I don't disagree with everything you're saying! F'r instance, yes, Maldo should bugger off. He has, with lots and lots of practice, barely become 'not outright dangerous' on the track. The only reason he is in F1 is because is is richer than Bernie and a couple of Sultans put together, and that is a horrible reason to be allowed free reign on an F1 circuit. I also agree that Perez and Hulkenberg were disappointing, and for this I blame F1 and the FIA's lack of budget control issues that I mention. The Force India team owner has been vocal about how they are barely scraping by, and he's been shouting at Bernie for Caterham and Marussia's sakes, especially after Red Bull had been caught cheating over the weekend. And yes, Alonso is making a massive mistake. I remember how misrable he was at McLaren previously, and I really do hope that Whitemarsh was the sole reason for his unhappiness (though I doubt it).

I don't think Rosberg is underrated though.. I believe people know exactly how flippen good he is, and I got the impression that Merc gave him as much support to win the title as they did Hamilton. Rosberg will win a championship yet, that's for sure.

Unfortunately the FIA and other people such as Bernie and Max has destroyed the sport for me, Most of the race tracks are boring and unimaginative, overtaking is based on KERS and a little skill. This season has been one of the most boring seasons in a long while - I think the Shumi era was close to it.

I enjoyed the season; I just ignored the "battle" for 1st, and watched the rest of the field. The battles between RIC, ALO, and VET were absolutely amazing most races, watching BUT work his way through the field several times was a pleasure, and the Williams drivers made the rest of the field very interesting. Most of the race tracks are largly unchanged in recent years, so I don't know if they should take the blame for you finding the season boring? (except for Russia, that track is awful!)

Regulation of the cars has always been a huge part of F1. Think back to the 90's where they banned active supsension, active aero's, driver aids, handed braking, etc., or even the 80's where they banned fans used to suck air upwards behind the car, or skirts that helped keep the air under the car, or the 70's where they banned 6 wheeled cars. Regulating the sport is fine, IMHO, but they do need to do something to allow the smaller teams to get a foothold in the sport. I don't think 3 cars per team is the answer, but I sure don't have any better ideas. Perhaps they should get the big four to give each of the smaller cars their aero package or engine or something, so the small team has less to develop themselves! :D

Bahahahahahahaha my fiancee was (there is no other word for it) agape when she saw Hamilton's bling. And she didn't even see the gold chain he was sporting this weekend :D

I do disagree with you labelling the cars as generic and boring. They certainly aren't pretty right now, with the platypus look, but they're far from generic and boring. The engineering is also still there, it's just in less obvious places. The major improvements this year lied in power delivery (to save tires), energy harvesting (the more you harvest, the fuel you need to carry. 1kg at the start of the race = 0.1 sec per lap, IIRC. Then look at HAM using about 3kg's of fuel less than anyone else..), aerodynamics (especially aft of the exhaust, the teams did major work there to control the stream, and in front of the wheels as well. It's an art to get air into the brakes!) and suspension (the way the power gets applied and braked off is completely different this year. This means that you need to change your suspension stiffness all over in order to get your car to sit right when you put on either power or brakes, otherwise your expensive aero's research wont' work!). I think it's more a case of the sport not highlighting these genuinely impressive feats properly, but that's also due to the teams being so secretive about their work, so it's a bit of a catch-22.

I don't watch MotoGP, so I can't really comment properly here. I can say that I've noticed the half empty stands as well, but luckily there were more completely packed stands than half empty ones. The only thing I'd like to say about this bit, is that we shouldn't take F1 seriously; it's not a serious sport! It's about spectacle and being over the top and liking the fact that one person can go around a corner slightly quicker than another person without having an accident. It's about drivers driving each other off the road at 250 km/h, and team mates being friends and bitter rivals and, like you said, doing absolutely anything for a win. Even Frank Williams, in a documentary on the engineering marvels of F1 (that I can't find right now, but it's on YouTube, I swear!) said that there is no point to F1. If F1 were to suddenly disappear, no great disservice will be done to the world.. And I think we should treat it as such.

You can always hit me up for a debate, though, I love arguing! :p

Last week’s Jules update
NOVEMBER 25, 2014 / GARY HARTSTEIN
First of all, as many of you have pointed out, we once again owe a deep and sincere thank you to Jules’ parents.
*snip*

I'm a slightly amazed that we're still receiving updates on his condition. With Phil Hughes in the news, I got to thinking about Jules again. I'm pleased to hear that they got him closer to his family, that can only bring good things.

Hehehe Let my brain rest first, the exams are over and I am exhausted :p

But yes I am happy the Bianchi family is keeping us up to date - more so than the Shumacher family. For me Jules is the biggest loss this season. I doubt he will survive this :( I also keep an ear out for Kubica, I miss that man dammit! I want himback in F1. He is actively working towards that goal again which is awesome.

Grats on finishing, gaan drink al die bier (of wyn of whiskey of brannas)!

Ja, things don't look good for Jules.. He'll definitely never race again. :/ Kubica was in F1 in the phase where I wasn't watching, but whatI do know about him makes me think I'd like seeing him back.

Just gimme the tequila!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Kubica was amazing, he would have been better than Vettel. . . And for me to say that is saying a lot.

Wow that was a terrible game.

Both games were terrible. I'm so disappointed. The worst is that I was second in most Superbru pools so to stand a chance of coming first a took a chance on the Aussies winning. Ugh.

And as for the Springboks, well I'm sad to say but I don't see a World Cup winning side in this team.

Soli on all honesty that ref screwed up our chances of coming back with the yellow on Hedriks and the Pen against Eben those were utter kak calls and it's as if it's getting a norm no to blow up the boks on shit calls and something should really be done about this cos it's fucking up our players and our game

Well done to the Blitz bokke but WTF is Cecil doing these days i think he got the record for most yellow cards in a tourney after this weekend it's almost as if he's doing it on purpose

Time for some test cricket! I hope we show WI a good time and perform better than we did against Australia in the last tour.

Good luck to the boys

A sad day indeed as one of the greats leaves football. Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool, tears are practically welling up.

Gerrard joined Liverpool as an eight-year-old and has made almost 700 appearances for the club and lifted 11 trophies.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is to leave the club at the end of the season for a move to the US, according to Sky sources.

Gerrard's future at Anfield has been the subject of speculation for several months and he has apparently decided to continue his career overseas when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old, who scored two penalties in Thursday's 2-2 home draw against Leicester, is said to be in talks with Major League Soccer franchise LA Galaxy and the two New York clubs - City and Red Bulls.

is expected to go public with his plans later today to avoid speculation over his future becoming a distraction during the rest of the season.

Gerrard's decision to quit Liverpool, the only club he has played for in his illustrious professional career, will come as a huge blow to many supporters who were hoping he would stay on.

He was offered a new deal in November, but it is thought he believes the time is right to move on at the end of the campaign and experience something different.

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, a close friend of Gerrard and now a Sky Sports football pundit, wrote on Twitter: "Sad day for LFC & English football with the Gerrard news, I think it's the right decision all things considered."

He added: "Mark my words Gerrard is the greatest player to have played for #lfc sad sad day for everyone connected with the club."

Former England star Gary Lineker tweeted that Liverpool owe Gerrard a huge debt for his loyalty and performances.

"So that's it then, Gerrard is going. What a player he has been for Liverpool. Dragged teams to levels they'd never have reached without him," he said.

Gerrard, who stood down as England skipper after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, joined Liverpool as an eight-year-old and has made 695 appearances for the club and lifted 11 trophies.

His greatest moment came when he scored in the Champions League final in 2005 and inspired Liverpool to come from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan and win the trophy on penalties.

But his hopes of winning the Premier League are likely to remain unfulfilled after Liverpool came up agonisingly short last season and lost out to Manchester City. They currently lie eighth in the table, 17 points behind leaders Chelsea.

A report in the Daily Express says Gerrard, who famously turned down two moves to Chelsea, will not play for another club in England out of respect for Liverpool.

There has been no comment so far from the club.
