Nvidia 3D Vision

Just caught up on this thread. Good to see you got your setup working Neo... well, at least long enough to give it a test drive and see how good it is for yourself =) . It is awesome, but you can't really convey it to someone, they just have to try it out for themselves.

I decided to get myself set up with the 24" Zalman kit for now, should be arriving next week, they are incredibly difficult to find even internationally. A friend of mine was able to hook me up through Frontosa, who distribute Zalman kit locally, but they hadn't ever gotten one of these monitors before.

Hi guys,

I would like to start this reply off by giving ALL the glory to God for helping me to resolve the issue with my 3D glasses. I tested on my fiance's PC and it worked 100% which cleared the idea that it may have been a hardware fault. I then proceeded to boot up my own PC again and test stuff out, and it worked again! No issues!

This was by far the toughest and most disappointing failure I've had with my PC, but it just goes to show that through Him, literally ALL things are possible. Even PC problems which are insignificant.

If you guys want to know more about this setup, please, ask away!

Ok guys, just a slight delay on alienware price, cant get anything from dell so hes busy asking drive control if they can bring it in to the country so hold another day

Cool. But Neo, how does it actually work?

How do you "see" 3D images?

Here's a quick rundown:

You get a 120Hz capable LCD monitor. It works on 100Hz monitors as well but the image quality isn't that good. Then, you get a Nvidia 3D vision kit that contains the Nvidia Powered Glasses and Infra-Red emitter that plugs into a USB port.

So, when you've installed your IR emitter and monitor, all games that are launched will then launch in "stereoscopic" mode where it produces an image for your left eye and right eye respectively. The IR emitter then "tells" the glasses when to shutter the left and right lens. That then produces a 3D image.

What people need to understand is that 3D doesn't always mean stuff "popping" out of the screen, in fact it's really more of a depth perception effect that it gives. It's really difficult to explain to someone :(

GReat news Neo.. So did you play some more..What games did you try out?

Hey dude!

I didn't try any more games. I got this working at 00:00 last night. I was just SOOO happy it wasn't a hardware problem. Once it worked on my PC I left it alone lol. I have to say, so far I'm the most impressed by DotA.

Thanks Neo. And that especially as DOTA is a old game. I am getting money together to get the same setup as yurs. As you say it is the depth perception and that is good enough for me. Let us know how it works in FPS games .Thanks

I played Bad Company 2 with it no problems. The 3D effects are pretty nice but I don't know, even though it looks pretty awesome, I just don't want to play FPS games with Stereoscopic 3D...it somehow distracts you. When it comes to FPS games, in my own person opinion, I would turn the 3D effects off. Any other game, especially RTS games would definitely get the 3D treatment :)

The other thing I was pleasantly surprised with is that I could play Bad Company 2 with maximum settings, 2x AA and in Stereoscopic 3D....that means the performance drop is not that massive.

Like I said, it's personal choice. If I have to answer your purely based on the technology and how it looks, well then it's fantastic and adds a LOT of realism to the game. Just be prepared to up your game (literally) because all the pretty 3D graphics will distract you from the action lol.

Thanks for the honesty.

I'm going to try a few other games tonight, God willing, such as Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars and maybe even check what it does to Mass Effect :) Will let you guys know.

I've tried The Witcher but there is some strange slowdown when you activate Stereoscopic 3D in that game...not normal at all.

thanks again for all your efforts and input. Without you lots of us wont get this but your input will get a lot to come over to the 3d side. I love C&C so this will be intersting.Do u have Metro?

I don't have Metro. It doesn't really interest me that much so I didn't bother getting it. Judging from what I've read about the game and how system intensive it is, I doubt it will run well with S-3D enabled. I do however have the Starcraft 2 Beta (legal btw). I'm keen to see what that looks like in S-3D :)

Wow, 120hz is rather high, dont most monitors go up to 70hz? Well that sounds really cool! I can imagine that it is pretty hard to describe. I am rather envious. That just sounds so cool. So your playing and you are about to check characters etc like in real life

Well it doesn't make the graphics "better" it just adds another dimension to the gameplay. So instead of seeing "flat" 3D characters, they now look like actual characters that you can pick up and move around in your screen. I am really amazed with how they're doing this...it's baffling.

BTW...do you only have vision in 1 eye? I meant to ask earlier.

Okay so I tried a few more games last night!

Just Cause 2 seems to have an issue with 3D Vision even though it's rated as "3D Vision Ready". Perhaps it just needs some tweaking, but I didn't have time for that. I also tested Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars and it looks pretty cool. You'd need to play with the convergence and depth settings to make it look as good as it can, but once again I didn't have time to fiddle.

So far I'm really enjoying this new 3D Gaming. DotA is an absolute blast with this setup.

Thanks for the feedback and time you spend assiting us noobs...Well i decided i will put off on 2nd GTX and rather go for this
